Stage moves for the bassist

Sign in to disble this ad
We've all seen guitarists do their famous stage moves. The've danced, played their instrument in different ways, and have even destroyed them.

But are there any stage moves used by bassists? As far as I know, bassists aren't as energetic as guitarists. I've seen a live clip of the Who, where Pete Townshend was practically bouncing around during the song, while John Entwistle just stood there and played his bass.

Though I suppose I could do some cool moves while just standing there. Like, headbanging, or punching in time with the music...

John Entwistle made a career out of standing still, I think he looked pretty cool while doing it. It's interesting, everyone in the band was wild but him, it made him stand out even more.

Honestly, any stage moves a guitarist can do, a bassist can do. They are almost all stupid. Stage moves are always forced, if you spin your bass around your head, you're doing it for attention. Any time you move on stage, it should be because you FEEL it, not some choreographed N'Sync move. Just my opinion.

My brother went to a Tool concert, and he said everyone just stood still: the attention was obviously meant to be focused on the movies shown behind them. No moves there!

Flea moves. Just dance I guess. And if you look like an idiot- it happens. When I go around to promote this what I call myself if the people are friendly
"What do you do again?"
"Well I play bass, or that guy that makes an idiot of himself in the middle."
"OOO you have so much energy I love what you do, and oh ya you're pretty good at bass too"

Fun stuff sometimes. But when you hear the same things 100 times a night, its even better!

Harris's one 'foot on the monitor, machine gunning the audience' with the bass (seen throughout this clip, notably at 1:17) is classic!

That was friggin awesome! I play upright slap bass in a rockabilly trio at times. This guy blows away anyone I've ever seen. And he didn't even have to stand on his bass

The most important moves are the ones your fingers make on the strings!

As far as the stuff you are talking about, it probably depends completely on the style of music of the band.

A guy in a big funk band with horns probably doesn't pull off the same moves as a guy in a death metal outfit.

you could always try the crabwalk that robert trujillo does but it does look that you are constipated very badly. what my band always says, if you feel stupid doing something, the crowd probably likes it.

Cool real head banger!

Sid vicious used to go out into the audience and hit people across the head with his bass...

Arrr... those were the days... lol

I think of it more as a Cromagnon walk myself. Serious knuckle-dragging happening with that guy.
