Subbing Etiquette

Sign in to disble this ad
Hiya,

I was wondering if anyone might want to discuss their experiences "subbing" for another bass player. Should the guy provide you with charts for all the tunes? Is it worth your time learning three sets of tunes for a gig that you might not even been called to sub for?

I'd love to here some stories if anyone cares to post. Thanks

Matt

It depends on the gig, of course. I work with one organization (as a sub and when they send out a second band) who has charts, so the bass player, who called me for the gig, didn't need to provide anything. when I hired a sub for the gig I'm currently doing, I provided charts and a CD f the show (this is a theatrical gig, not a bar band). the gig I'm going on Monday night (as a sub) doesn't have charts for more than half of their material. So I wrote charts yesterday for the two sets that they have on their live DVD as well as the other stuff that was in their sub chart book (I'd rather have copies in my handwriting, plus writing the chart helps me to remember how the song goes). And tomorrow, between my morning session the gig, I'll write some more charts of songs from their last two CDs that didn't make it to the DVD....

IN an ideal world, you'd provide charts AND CD's to your sub. But it's not an ideal world...
