Couple of thoughts:

1) Even if you don't like the current name, come to him with some alternate suggestions. Saying "this sucks" means nothing to anyone and just makes you sound like a whiny B*. However, if you can explain why it doesn't work for you and at the same time provide a hand full of alternates you will come across much better.

2) Megadeth. Yup. Dumbest name ever, and even though they are kind of a "second tier" band, they still have gold and platnum albums under Mustains belt. Dumb names, like Star Wars for example, can be accepted as "good" the content is good. Its just getting people to buy the advertizing and check it out.

I hope this helps in some way.

+1 . Silly or not, the name will turn into a brand of sorts with any level of real world success, and noone will care about the name, least of all you...I mean, "The Who", like really, did anyone EVER think that would be a remotely OK name for a band? Some idiot did, apparently, and look now, 50 years down the road...

A drummer in one of my old bands seriously suggested the name "Purple Helmet". I told him he was the only d#*khead in the band.

I don’t see what’s to “bad” about the name... I’ve read tons of worse (imo) stuff recommended on “help me name my band” threads.

At least it’s short enough to fit on a t-shirt, merch and a marquee without having to be abbreviated or use the initials, which is something I hate about long names.

And if the band is known and the name has built up some goodwill, it might be foolish to change it at this point.

No such thing as bad band names. Only bad bands.
A bad band with a great name will be a bad band.
A great band with a bad name will be a great band.

Don't just make it about your personal dislike for the name. Frame it as a marketing issue for the band generally.
I guess that's the angle I was getting at.
Don't make it personal, just find some way to open it up as a band discussion.

There are no good or band names.

Thanks to this board, I just spent the day listening to Budgie.

well, you could do worse, I guess. but I agree the name's gotta go. The problem is, almost every viable band name seems to be taken nowadays.

I see nothing wrong with the name. I was expecting a much worse name. In fact, it's probably an above average name.

I didn't think of Metallica until it was mentioned. It did think of Godiva Chocolates though.

Metallica was the first thing I thought of. I have to agree with the OP, it's a pretty bad name. Gives me the impression of coming across as possibly being pretentious and or lame. But like has been mentioned elsewhere in the thread, the name doesn't really matter, it's the quality of the music that people remember. You've gotta get 'em to listen first though.

+1. But I've been a fan of Metallica for a very long time.

By itself, the name Godica isn't really that bad. The "God" reference will catch people and/or like it or not, a lot of people are going to be reminded of Metallica, and may compare their sound to yours, or expect an influence etc.
