Thoughts on Drummer as Lead Singer?

Sign in to disble this ad
I am strongly thinking joining this band which has their drummer as their lead vocalist. He is a decent enough singer, but I was just wondering what effect the drummer also being the lead singer might have on the band and more importantly on the audience in terms of stage presence. Cant really move around stuck behind a kit.

Just means you have to put on more of a show.

Worked for Phil Collins

I think it could work if the singer is good and the rest of the band is good at putting on a show.

I have to admit, I have never personally seen a band where only the drummer sings. I have seen bands, mainly blues, where the drummer takes a few songs. I have always enjoyed it.

You and the guitarist will have to be more theatric, but theres no reason why you couldn't be entertaining.

I once saw a band just like this. It was weird. The drumkit was right up front, with everyone else on the sides of the drums. They were pretty static, but that guy was just nuts. Rocking out and singing, doing both perfectly. I thought it was great, because he was great on both

Cremaster's drummer doesn't do vocals but has great stage presence. When I saw them they set up the kit sideways in the middle of the stage so he's wasn't hidden by it.

http://www.cremaster.pl has a nice gallery with photos of various live mayhem. The drum kit seems to be positioned conventionally most of the time, though here's a photo of it sideways:

You can see he's looking at the audience and waving his left stick at them.

You have to be really talented to sing and drum well at the same time.

If I’m not mistaken, the lead singer for Cowboy Mouth is also the drummer. You might want to check them out.

Drummer as lead singer

This unusual set up sure worked well for the '80's band, "Night Ranger." They are best known for the songs, "Sister Christian," and, "Rock in America."

Rocketface is like what Gord described. The drummer stands and sings/plays on certain parts of their tunes also. I enjoyed that setting.

I saw a hair band cover band do this and while it was really impressive I was looking around trying to figure out who was singing cause he was in the back. I didn't like it much mostly because the fact another lead singer (bassist) was singing the whole show before that. but the band was great.

The drummer in my band not only sings lead but does the lion's share of the fronting (I do the rest). If you're good, it really doesn't matter. I remember a time when a lot of drummers sang...Pete Rivera of Rare Earth (who sang everything), Don Brewer of Grand Funk (sang half the songs), Peter Criss of KISS (sang a few songs)...only since the last few years has it been unfashionable for a drummer to sing. I don't know if it's because drummers are getting lazier and lazier, or if the record company idiots don't allow it anymore.

Check out Dixie Witch. Heavy arse stoner rock with a singing drummer. He's playing a huge kit as well.

Every band I've been in, the drummer has several leads and a lot of backing vocals - but none are considered front men.
