I am strongly thinking joining this band which has their drummer as their lead vocalist. He is a decent enough singer, but I was just wondering what effect the drummer also being the lead singer might have on the band and more importantly on the audience in terms of stage presence. Cant really move around stuck behind a kit. |

I think it could work if the singer is good and the rest of the band is good at putting on a show.
I have to admit, I have never personally seen a band where only the drummer sings. I have seen bands, mainly blues, where the drummer takes a few songs. I have always enjoyed it.

They were pretty static, but that guy was just nuts. Rocking out and singing, doing both perfectly. I thought it was great, because he was great on both |

When I saw them they set up the kit sideways in the middle of the stage so he's wasn't hidden by it. http://www.cremaster.pl has a nice gallery with photos of various live mayhem. The drum kit seems to be positioned conventionally most of the time, though here's a photo of it sideways:
You can see he's looking at the audience and waving his left stick at them.

I didn't like it much mostly because the fact another lead singer (bassist) was singing the whole show before that. but the band was great.

If you're good, it really doesn't matter. I remember a time when a lot of drummers sang...Pete Rivera of Rare Earth (who sang everything), Don Brewer of Grand Funk (sang half the songs), Peter Criss of KISS (sang a few songs)...only since the last few years has it been unfashionable for a drummer to sing. I don't know if it's because drummers are getting lazier and lazier, or if the record company idiots don't allow it anymore. |
