Tiredness at gigs

Sign in to disble this ad
I need some advice on this one.

I'm just about to finish off a series of gigs tomorrow, after playing for 3 weeks on and off. But one of the problems I've been having is that after gigs I've been so tired. Not straight after but a couple of hours later, and the next couple of days I feel lousy.
What could I do to try and help this? Most of my gigs have finished by 7pm so late finishes aren't an issue.

Seen as I'm only playing at church and for personal projects, I really only need to take my Shergold bass (which the case weighs a ton for!), my case containing all my cables, tuner, pedals etc and maybe the odd music book.

The amp is supplied by my church,

Really hard to tell, but one quite likely reason is that you are way too strung up when you play. Nervous and anxious to do your very best. That can be very draining.

If that's the case you need to relax. Easier said than done, I know.

That's a difficult one. You are obviously enjoying the gigs as there will be a lot of adrenilin going through you system, that's why you will feel so lousy the next day. Withdrawl symptoms! that is probably why so many bands have anded up using illicit substances in the past, just to counteract that withdrawl.

What do you do to relax after a gig? It's a bit like warming up and warming down before and after sport. If you don't warm down you have more chance of having very stiff muscles the next day as the lactic acid has not been allowed to drain from the muscles gradually. Some people party after a gig to bring them down gradually. You might be well advised to find something that suits you to bring you down after the gig to allow that adrenilin to clear you body slowly so you can avoid that withdrawl the next day.

Exactly! Lay off of the "pick-me-ups" like chocolate bars or potato chips. Anything with a lot of sugar in it. This tends to tire you out after a few hours.

Exercise is crucial. Eat plenty of greens! (The darker the fruit is, the better.)

Drink your green tea!

Maybe your best bet would be to go for a walk and take in some of that lovely fresh Newcastle air.

are these extreme volume gigs accompanied by ear ringing (tinnitus)??? if so, i can relate, as somehow the volume helps to kick the s**t out o' me. my marshall toting guitard makes sure of it. i'm now forced into being an avid ear plug user.

It might be- I'm stood only about 5 feet from my amp on-stage (I use a Trace Elliot 450w amp and pre-amp). That and the guitarists amp being behind me and the drummer being 3ft from me to my right.

Actually what seems to do it for me is water, plenty of water.

I'm with the gang that says ya gotta eat better and take care of yourself. Maybe even see a doctor. There really ain't no reason you should be so drained after gigs. Eat right and exercise. Just like mom used to say.

Are you depressed? That can do it too ya know.

The whole eating healthily and exercising thing is easier said than done when I'm a university student with quite a few commitments, often left with little time to myself.

My suggestion: Have a nice hearty meal (but don't overstuff yourself) about an hour or so before the gig. Avoid alcohol. And stay hydrated throught the evenong! And get plenty of sleep after the gig. Have a nourishing breakfast the next morning.
