| Transitioning from the "sticky floor circuit" Hey all,
I've enjoyed about 9 years playing covers, primarily in sports bars. I've maintained one band all these years and have had 2 other side projects, along with some subbing. I mainly play bass, sing harmonies (and a half-dozen or so leads per gig), and do maybe 10 songs on keys.
I've played just a few functions, and thought this might be the next step in my musical career. I'm not a virtuoso, but my classical piano background has given me a great ear and decent theory knowledge, so I can pick up new songs very quickly. I'm told I play nice lines. I put in my time practicing between band rehearsals, and I admit this bugs me when others don't. I don't think a change in "mindset" would be a problem, or would be a change in my approach/attitude.
Soooo, to those of you who do, or have done, function (GB?) band work, how did you get into it? Craigslist doesn't seem to be the place for it, at least not in Greater Boston so far. Does "cold calling" bands/agent/manager/whomever work?
My motivation is various parts financial, career progression, and part "it'd be nice to not have to bring much of the crowd."
Thanks,
Mike |
