No "I travel by carrots" option?

We all travel separately, as we all live on opposite sides of the city. Plus, all of us except the singer bring way too much gear around so it'd be hard to carpool anyway.

I picked "All meet at rehearsal space and travel in seperate vehicles?" but that excludes our drummer.

He cant drive so we have to cram all our gear AND his into 3 cars and meet him there. Oh yeah and we pack it all back into our rehearsal space for him at the end of the night.

Yeah he has a cushy number. Turns up, sets up, plays the gig and tears down. We do all the loading and unloading.

well.. I have 2-3 weekly gigs... my church.. and it's right across the street, and I keep most of my gear there... soo..

I walk...

When we do other stuff (retreats, etc) I usually roadie the equipment (so I can have a church van to load my cabs *L*) and in that case, I'll have 2-3 people help me out with gear, and then meet everyone up at the retreat.

I can set-up a full band in about 20 minutes.. 45 if I have to run mics, and such.

Sometimes I meet the other musicians at the venue, sometimes I meet the bus, sometimes I get dropped off at the airport where I meed the band either at check-in or at the boarding gate. And last week, the van came by the house to pick up me and my acoustic bass...

Only one of those was in the poll...

I usually pick up the lead guitarist and we carpool to the gig.

I almost always just meet the band at the venue. I have a small car that only fits my gear, so I really don't have a good reason to go meet up with somebody else. Everybody else in my bands also just carry their own equipment in their own cars, and also all just meet at the venue separately. Thats not saying that I haven't met up and "caravaned" with the band on occasion, but not often.

We have a trailer that our PA/light gear goes in; the drummer carries his kit in his pickup; I take the bass + amp and other necessities in my car; the lead player takes his amp + guitars...are you saying maybe you don't have a lot of stuff to pack???

Here's a good reason why I travel alone...

ONE time in UtaW my band car-pooled to a gig. I drove 40 minutes from my house to the singer's house to travel in her truck with the guitarist. So, I load my gear in her truck and we dive 3.5 HOURS from SLC to Cedar City for a gig that night. We arrive at the bar, unload the truck, and it was then that I realized I left my RACK in the trunk of my car back in SLC. No amp for me...I was so MAD!

Thankfully, one of the guys at the bar knew of a bassist and he let me borrow his SWR amp. I was relieved big time and am still thankful to this day.

But, never again....

first off.
magic carrot ride?

being the only kid in my band that can drive...everyone comes to my house, sometimes by means of me picking them up, then we load up as much as we can into my sweet whip. then were off to the gig.

no recognition for all the gas money i spend. it sucks.

for gigs in the city, we just show up on our own. some folks (myself included) don't have cars, so we either hitch a ride or take the T/bus. i tend to do this most of the time, 'cause i hate askin for a ride. hurrah for public transport.

out of town/state gigs: all cars meet up and caravan.

If we only need to bring our own instruments, amps and mics, we meet at the venue. In other cases, which is way more often, we meet at the place where we have the other stuff we need and then go with as many cars as necessary (usually 1-3) to the venue.

EDIT: Voted for the second option, but as said, we use the other alternatives too (except the last one ), according to what the common sense says.

Generally I go help pack the PA and keyboard into the other members' truck, then go to the venue a bit before they'll arrive so I can help on the load in and setup. When we use a drummer, he just shows up on his own, almost always too late to help with the PA, and late enough that we're forced to help him load in.

It's amazing how many drummers have developed that skill!

In town it would be silly to meet, but anywhere more than 20-30 minutes away Los Blancos gathers in one spot and rides together. Everybody moves all the gear every night, that's what a band does. Everybody hawks CDs, everybody squeezes hands all over the room on the breaks. If people are always going their own route, and only moving their own stuff, you are not a band, you are just playing together. A band is an indivisible unit, with a common goal. One band, one pile of gear, one purpose: kick total everlovin' azz. That's what a real band IS.

If people are being endlessly fussy about who drives where or moves what and those kind of things they have chosen the wrong hobby, and certainly the wrong career. Playing music for people in return for financial compensation is a privilege that should not be taken lightly.
