Trying to market myself as a session bassist and/or fill in

I'm in need of some extra cash to get through these days of work hours being cut back. I work in the auto industry but a Japanese company. We're taking a hit just like the big 3 are but not as bad.

Anyway, I'm wondering what all I need to do to get my name out there as a fill in. I know some of you guys do this kind of thing a lot. I do have studio experience as well and am more than willing to be on someone's CD. Any exposure is good exposure, well not any exposure but you know what I'm talking about. I've got a myspace page up with a couple tracks I played on here recently. I'm also in 3 bands but none of them are gigging regularly. I did have a gig a few weeks ago but that was about it for that.

What else does one have to do to get his name out there in the local scene?

Play out A LOT. Talk to literally every and any musician or studio person you meet at a musical venue. Have a nice, simple way to get your information to them whenever you need to pass it out. Work on your chops constantly, and be used to playing in as many different styles as you can.

and be able to sight read really, really well. I get an occasional call to go into a local studio and record charts cold without having seen them in advance. It's quick and easy money if you can cut it.

This. Something I need to perfect.

Also, business cards would be a great idea. My dad knows a guy who makes them for free, he has a website. Ill try to find out more info, and PM you Capn.
