Tune Ideas.. trio with less power (acoustic guitar)

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm going to do some pick up gigs with an old friend and a drummer that I work with a lot (my roommate). He plays acoustic guitar and sings really well. However, he has a deeper voice. He's basically a bass that can reach a bit. Doesn't mean we're gonna play a ton of country though! He also plays harmonica.

We're gonna do some of his tunes he does with his brother in an acoustic duo, but we also wanna do some party/bar type tunes. I'm singing harmony, and will sing lead on tunes we decide to do and he can't or doesn't want to sing them..

So I'm singing the real standard ones...
Brown Eyed Girl
Summer of 69
Sweet Home Alabama...

Then he has his stuff. But we're probably gonna come up short on material for this group and setting.

Any cover ideas for a trio with less power with a bass singer?

One thing we're gonna try is some R&B type stuff and just lay into the bass and drums and he'll just do simple acoustic stuff.. some of Bill Withers stuff maybe.

Brainstorm with me here thanks

We do some pretty rocky stuff acoustically, but we add sort of a swing feel to it.

Man in the box goes over very big (I play my cardboard box bass).

I think Golden Earring would be freaking spectacular with a basso type singer and a walking bassline!

I really love these guys! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cYJUywl7CFw

Violent Femmes. Blister in the Sun to be specific, although there are others that might work. Considering their primary lineup was Acoustic Guitar, Acoustic Bass and drums, that should work pretty well soundwise.

Blister in the Sun would be cool. I'm actually a violent femmes fan, but I don't think anyone would know any other ones.

You could maybe do 'Add It Up' and 'Gone Daddy Gone'. Although I dunno how the latter would go over without a xylophone.

well done you can just change the key... sheesh it's common for a band to record high tennor in G.. then drop to D for stage use.

If your singer has a low voice, do that Mmm Mmm song by Crash Test Dummies.

You could also do "La Grange" and maybe "Boom Boom Boom Boom" by John Lee Hooker although you might want to space them apart since they're basically the same song.

Lou Reed sings pretty low too.

And there's that country guy, can't remember his name but he had a hit with "Long Black Train."

That would be Josh Turner. There's also that other country guy who had a hit with "Long Black Veil." http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p-AED1BjuJ8&feature=fvw
