I did it in a punk band once......took it out to a gig (hardcore show), and apparently it was too much for them.......all i heard were the words "loud and fast"......it sounded really cool to me tho in my playing with another bassist

James Brown has had two bass players at a time in his band, I'm not sure how much simulatenous playing they did though.

My college jazz band has two bassists counting myself, and I find it doesn't work. Both have to be playing the exact same notes in the exact same time or the entire band becomes a train wreck or the bottom end is dominated by mud. For this reason is why my rock band is a power trio (I do bass, lead vocals, piano/synths and am the primary songwriter).

Saw "Dumpstafunk" down in New Orleans a few weeks ago.

Beyond good, beyond great - this band, and especially the bassists, were phenomenal by any measure. Monster players, funky and grooving, Meters-like.

Don't recall the guy's name on the far left. Far right is Tony Hall, iirc. And yes, the two guys in the middle are Nevilles (Ian and Ivan).

I think the idea is great! I saw Joni Mitchell do it and it was fantastic. She had one on upright and another playing a Fender P bass - perfect combo there. The idea in my head would be for one to hold down the very fundamental aspects so it never sounds like the bottom drops out and the other to play a more melodic role, like a cello might do.

The idea would be NOT to treat this like some novelty feature and play it up, rather provide for some more lattitude in performance. How many times have you bass players wanted to do something melodic but felt that you would be sacrificing the bottom end?

I like it.

The band Toupe has two bassists and a drummer, at times it seems alittle jumbled but its a pretty cool sound when they do it right.

I saw Marcus Miller last summer. Two bass players. Absolutely incredible.
