Two drummers in one band

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey all, have recently started a band at uni; we had our first practise with both drummers tonight . . .

. . it sounded messy, at best.

Does anyone have any experience in playing in a band with 2 drummers, or any ideas we would use to keep things sounding good.

It is very easy to muddy up the sound, and we need to somehow arrange things so they are playing different things, like one plays a beat and the other embellishes the other instrumental parts. Any ideas?

Thanks, Rytch

2 people serving one role is redundant. so change up the role of the drummers. try something different

it would be cool to play in compound meeter with one of them in 4 and the other in 3

so they would occasionally meet up.

stuff like that

listen to Motown. most of the Funk Brother's recordings had two drummers. but they served different roles. one was straight and solid, the other did all the fills and silly stuff.

You should check out Fugazi's "the argument". They used 2 drummers on this, and while there is times where you can't hear the difference. There are definately moments where the idea really shines.

Convince one of them to take up the Congas. Check out "Screaming Headless Torsos."

I was going to mention this as well. The Melvins have been playing with two drummers to somewhat of a same approach.

There's always the Allman Brothers Band to check out as well as a new indie group called Matthew and the Arrogant Sea.

Imagine the possibilities - with two drummers, there's a chance that one of them will get to gigs on time!

modest mouse use two drummers in a lot of their live gigs, sounds tidy to me! also maybe if occaisionally one drummer moves onto auxilary percussion to add more colour to the piece it could work!

the last two melvins albums have had two drummers, and both dudes are there for live shows. i caught them over the summer and it really blew me away. check out "a senile animal" and "nude with boots."

edit: someone beat me to it, swear to god i read every post. must have missed it.

It just sounds like so much more gear for the bass player to move.

You just have to work out the arrangement and who is playing what - if both drummers are used to playing without other percussion or drumming - then it can take some time to find your space. But as stated here - done well and it can be very cool.

Very good examples posted above, BUT, the drummers would have to be synchromeshed like a transmission, working together, like the Allman/Doobie Bros. bands. It took time to develop the groove.

2 drummers = 4 times the problems.

Why two drummers?
