Visual Problems

So, my band is going to play at a local event. We have been told that there will be a projection screen going during our set and we can play anthing we want over it. Problem is, we don't know what to put up! Anyone got any ideas? We are a spacey-rock band so something really trippy/spacey is what we are going for. Know any movies that have something we can use?

If you want sleazy-campy to go with your spacey-rock image, project "Plan 9 From Outer Space". Or if you wanna be retro-spacey you could use "2001, A Space Odyssey". Maybe just the psychedelic light show from the middle of it, but I think the scenes of HAL would be inspiring, too.

I agree. There's a ton of other 1950s space movies that'd be fun too. My band played some movie about Santa getting kidnapped by Martians at one show.

Word I'll start looking for some 1940-50's space movies. See if I can't find anything good.

I went to a concert that managed to synchronise clips from the Smurfs to their choruses on the projection screen.

When I saw Smashing Pumpkins on the Siamese Dream tour they showed the chase scene from The Bullitt as a kind of sound system warm up. It was so awesome to have the stadium roaring with screeching tires and big-block motors. But that's an amazing surround sound story more than a projection story. Sorry.

How about that windows screen saver that shoots stars at you and makes you feel like you're moving at hyper speed. I'd probably just hookup itunes to play the visualizer to muted music.

Not a bad idea. We are also looking into using some clips from Blade Runner. Might be cool.

+1 to the 50's space flicks. I don't think you'll have to worry about legal issues if you're playing a bar. People do that type of thing all the time and don't get sued over it.

I play in a metal band and at our last show we had the zombie movie "Dead Alive" playing over us. We didn't make it to the lawnmower scene but there were some pretty cool parts where the shots in some of the songs lined up perfectly with squirting blood and guts. Hope you find something that works. Old cartoons like Speed Racer and Voltron would be cool too.
