vocal amplification!

Sign in to disble this ad
hey! me and my band started getting our stuff together to rehearse at my drummer's place- we've finally gotten together the drumset, bass amp and guitar amps, but now we can't hear vocals over the din. we have mikes and a mixer, but nothing to amplify the vocals with.

what should we get? we're very budget conscious!

advice please? i'm not sure what exactly we need. I think we'll need a power amp and a speaker? or something? i don't know anything about vocal related amplification and stuff so hit me with everything!

thanks guys

If you have a mixer and mics, a power amp and speakers to plug them into will be the only things you need.

Regular PA speakers will work fine.

Hi.

If looking to buy new:

We use these as monitors / smallest PA (acoustic)

http://www.thomann.de/gb/the_box_ma120_mk_ii.htm

A pair of these in PA in "not that loud" gigs:

http://www.thomann.de/gb/the_box_pa5...angesystem.htm

In these:

http://www.thomann.de/gb/millenium_b...taenderset.htm

Both cabs double as monitors when used with our kW range PA, and as rehearsal PA.

Get's the work done, for us (rock covers) at least.

When looking at these cheapos just think Chinese/Behringer and remember the mantra: "You get what You pay for".
For me the 3year warranty is good enough.

If looking to buy used:

Your local (where ever that might be) area should have quite lot of separates in the power range You're lookin for, for sale as people are IME leaning towards active systems for portability and ease of use. When going for separates, there HAS TO be at least one person responsible for taking care of the cables and such as the used and/or cheap stuff is IME rather fragile if not in rack cases and permanently wired.

For practice and sometimes smaller gigs, I'll 2nd the powered JBL's. A couple of my previous bands have done this. Worked out great. Do yourself a favor though, wear hearing protection. If you've got to amplify vocals for practice, you're loud enough you should also be wearing hearing protection. In one of those bands, 2 of the members did not use protection and now have permanent damage, probably from our practices more than the performances.

thanks, yes all of us wear ear plugs when we practice because the cymbals are really really loud in that small room.

pardon me, what's a JBL? >_<

JBL EONs are great. I own a the EON 15 and it puts out great sound.

You could get 2 of those, or a sub and 2 EON 10s and rock out.

To answer your question, JBL is a high end speaker/PA/etc company
