being at berklee I obviously have opportunities there, but I want to branch out to nonberklee things.

did you use craigslist to get your feet wet or what?

thanks!
You want a fill in gig? I just saw this one on Craig's List. All the tunes are simple and the gig pays $150. Not bad.

Here's a link to the ad.

I would have tried to get the gig, but I'm booked already.

I've only done this once, for a band whose bassist quit due to an angry spouse, who smashed the guy's Schecter on the sidewalk suspecting an affair with the (very hot and excellent) drummer. Now THAT's rock 'n roll! The band leader is a close friend who I've played with in other bands. They had an important cancer benefit show coming up, which he didn't want to cancel, so I stepped in. It was a great experience. By learning their material and playing with their drummer, I improved my playing (especially timing) considerably. This, in turn, allowed me to succeed in an audition for another band, which is now my only gig. So these are definitely opportunities to take, and if I had the time I'd be looking for more, no question.

(BTW, the original bassist returned fairly quickly, and all is well in the band.)

on a completely unrelated note, Ive seen so many people playing schecter basses recently...I played a show with 21 bands yesterday...of those bands a little under half played schecters!....weird

My fill-in gigs last week absolutly rocked! Had a blast. Can't wait to do it again!!! The guys were great, and I got a fantastic response.

This weeks gig with my regular band was a bit of a let-down by comparison - far too safe, and I felt taken for granted. On the dep gig everyone was REALLY pleased for me to be there, and I got loads of great comments. Back to the regular gig, and I'm just the guy at the back again...

Anyone need a dep - South coast UK?

The last few years before I left LA I was subbing all over the place! I totaled it up at tax time once in 1992. I'd played with 30 different bands in the previous 12 months.
That's one of the good things about playing country. Subbing is easy! I kind of miss that now.

+1 These are the only types of gigs I've done for almost 20 years! It keeps things interesting, you can take off when you need to (no subs to hire), and in general, the freelance community of players is usually populated by the better players in town.

If you are willing to travel regionally, there is even more work!
