Hey Everyone,
My did a gig last night, and although there were only 10 people present, it was a great laugh and we played the best we ever had, probably because it was more like an extended music section.
We stayed around to see what others were playing (it was a mini festival for a college here) and there was a band called Sunday Morning People who were a fours piece (drums, keys, bass, vocals) who whacked out covers of Hot'n'Cold, Superstition and so on and it was so great! I havent seen such a funky, tight band together for so long. I went and chatted to their bassist - he was playing a Warwick of sorts 4 strings with two Jazz-style pickups.
Afterwards, the band agreed we should get funkier. We are going for the New Wave style, both in terms of our covers and original material. I think we do it quite well but I think my bass playing might be part of what could make it better. I'm playing my newly aqiored Rickenbacker 4003, and I know they say the bass doesn't make that much difference but can you really get groovy and funky on a Ric?
And in terms of playing style, and thoughts or advice on what to do? We aren't going to loose our new wave edge, but we just want to bring a little something more into it!
Seb

| | | | I don’t think a lot of typical rock bands get it.
I know I’d rather have a funky Bass and a Rhythm Guitar (w/a little lead where appropriate) than the Bass back there somewhere being “felt-more-than-heard” with two Guitars wanking away.
Simply can’t get funky w/out a bad-azz bassline being a more integral part of the mix.
I guess it’s a matter of taste, but I bet the funkier one comes over better to the average crowd. |

The song Superfreak's video, and maybe the actual song, was recorded with a Ric. Funk isnt about the gear, its about the style.
Lots of slapping, deads notes, double stops, etc. Just study it, get lots of Sly and The Family Stone, The Graham Brothers, James Brown, Parliament, etc. albums and listen to them nonstop. As long as you can hit the root note on the one, and throw an octave in the mix you will be fine.
A good song to play with a band beginning funk is Cissy Strut by The Meters. No vocals, and lots of space to jam and solo.

Funk is a dish best served slow. Let it simmer. Don't burn it.

Randy | This. I once heard a slow version of Mustang Sally (usually fairly quick) and it grooved like a *****. With a female vocalist it can be incredibly sexy.
Also, see Mark Ronson's version of Toxic.
