So tonight, I was checking out an old performance from back in 1996 with an old cover band I played with. The songs we're pretty much top 40'ish stuff from the mid-nineties - stone roses, collective soul, seven mary three, etc.
It was a time when I knew nothing about gear. I was using an old Eastwood jazz copy, straight into an old Peavey solid state head, and a 2-15 Fender bottom that I picked up at a pawn shop, just to have something to play.
My lord, the bass tone was solid, in the pocket, growling, and crisp.
Watching this, I was totally inspired. Unfortunately, the video is blurry, and the only thing I can remember is that:
1) I played completely fingerstyle, really close to the bridge
2) I used the bridge pickup exclusevely
3) I always, for some reason, kept the "tone" knob on the bass turned all the way down
4) I had the graphic EQ always set flat on the head
That's it... and the worse part is, I go into the studio next week, and I would KILL to have that bass tone again for the recordings...
Ahh, the irony of ignorance...
Anyways, tell me about your reflections of your home videos and past performances that you just can't seem to re-create.
