| | | | Well, looks like we have to do a show with no lead guitarist

Un-freaking-believable, but it looks like its come down to this, on this one show anyway. We haven't found a permanent replacement guitarist yet, and couldn't get a fill in guy for this one show.
We will be playing with acoustic rhythm guitar, bass and drums for instruments, and two singers. No lead guitar. We've never even rehearsed this way. I'd better play darn good.
FWIW, I went to meet with a guitarist last night. Just myself, none of the rest of the band could make it. This guy came recommended from someone, who said he could step in and do the job. I volunteered to go over most of the set list with him, help him through any difficult parts. Basically, just help him get familiarized with the music. I could tell after 20 minutes it wasn't going to work. I can't recommend him to the band.

Kazoo solo!
Sorry, I know that's not real helpful...

(Except four singers.) Our motto: fill with vocals! Have faith, it will work, and your ears won't ring nearly as much.

What Would Johnny Cash Do?? Also, try really hard to sell the idea that you did this on purpose and you guys are cool as #^$* for pulling it off! |

Act like we're doing it on purpose. We might just get away with it because its a private party gig at someone's residence.
I thought of something kinda funny. I've got limited band experience. I had a cup of coffee with a couple of bands, played a few gigs, before this current band.
Even within this limited time, I've seen plenty of crapola. First band had a b#$%^ diva female singer who wasn't very good. Second band had a drunk singer that ruined shows. Third band had a guitard walk off gig and leave us stranded. What's next? We're obviously going to play a perfect gig. That hasn't happened yet, so that has to be next.

That's the line-up of our church praise band, and I love it. I have SO much room to play whatever I wish, just keeping out of the way of the vocals. Enjoy it.

Dee Murray is awesome and you DO NOT care that there's no guitar.

If you have the time and inclination, I'd just call another soloist, whether it be a sax, trumpet, keys, or something even more exotic.. If not, three instruments is plenty enough, especially with 2 voices on top... |

I live our guitarist, but my favorite gig with this band was the one he could not make it to. I could hear myself (playing and singing harmonies) 1000x better than any other gig I have ever done. Try not to enjoy it too much. |

This is our church line up every Sunday, which means I turn into the Lead Bassist. My praise leader loves the intro solos and little fills I put in the songs. Go for it and have some fun!

Or Victor, or Les, or John Paul, or Babbitt.
I'm just a still (relatively) newbie bassist. Oh well. Welcome to the School Of Rock, I guess. |

| | | | We pulled it off. I'm not saying I was happy with our sound, but we pulled it off OK, got paid, and I'm proud that we didn't cancel the gig.
I played a lot more notes, put in some signature guitar intro lines and stuff that we were missing. Still, it wasn't nearly as good as having lead guitar. We missed it for sure.
One thing... the rhythm guitarist didn't have his capo - he uses it on several songs. I made him a capo on the spot with a Bic pen and a piece of elastic strap cut from my old carrying case that I keep cords and tools in. Whatever it takes. LOL

The musician that can make stuff happen on the spot is a pro and highly desirable when word gets out that you just come through no matter what. **** happens all the time in performances and you have to make it look like it didn't happen. That's just being a pro. Good job.

my bands have always been more intricate, so without a guitar, we're pretty much nothing but me looking like an idiot, but at church... two singers, acoustic guitar, me and a drummer. the guitarist stays on it, so i don't worry about him. my favourite new trick is to run unison lines with the vocals during the verse, then lay it down hard on the chorus. sounds killer. just try not to steal the show too much
