Forgive me if this has been covered recently. I'm here a lot, but can't read everything.
This is my first band w/ a Female vocalist. We're doing what to me is hard rock, what they just call rock now.
So far we are doing covers from: Evenecence, Flyleaf, Nickleback, G N R, maybe some Zep, ZZtop and some originals. She is very versitile and talented.
Any advice or cover suggestiong please.
Country, Country Rock or Blues would be considered, due to where we live. Janis Joplin maybe?

Rock The Boat.
Suggest some Divinyls. "I Touch Myself" and "Pleasure and Pain" are both pretty well known.
Or Baby Animals. One Word or Painless. They're well known too.

For female vocals in your genre's, also consider songs by:
GARBAGE!!!
The Pixies
Spiderbait (Calypso goes off over here, and is dead easy to play)
The Breeders
L7 (Pretend We're Dead)
Pink
Melissa Etheridge
Hole (Celebrity Skin usually goes off)
No Doubt/Gwen Stefani (I'm Just A Girl)
Anastacia
B-52's
Pat Benetar
Concrete Blonde
Kelly Clarkson
Oh and you better be doing I Love Rock N Roll by Joan Jett and the Blackhearts too LOL

Other thoughts I just had:
Donna Summers, Amy Stewart, Pointer Sisters, Tina Turner, Bette Smith (Jazz blues singer IIRC), Kate Bush etc

Wikipedia is your friend too:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_all-female_bands

http://www.thebeststuffintheworld.co...emale-vocalist

For starters.

Google is your friend too.

Obviously, I play in a female led Top40 Rock type covers band with some male led songs (70/30 maybe).

And maybe it's me, but I find the melodies, changes and music in general to be "less subtle" as it were, when female vocals are leading.
Probably just is me and the mix of songs I'm currently playing, but it's a pattern I've noticed.

Have fun...

Hi.

In addition to previously suggested great original female vocal tracks, I'd like to suggest something that isn't as predictable, so to speak.

You probably know how to transpose music to different keys, that suit just Your vocalists voice and vocal range. Ones that are originally sung by male singers. Those do make a fine addition to any set list.

And don't forget duets, if possible (like Qzzy and Lita just to mention one)

Regards
Sam

We have a lady. She does about 80% of songs. Me and the guitarist do a few ourselves.

we cover a lot of the major female artists. Plus males that had really high voices (like Steve Perry). Plus she does some clearly male vocals and it sounds good (like we do a Barry White -- she does it an octave higher or 2!)

Here's our set list (it's out of date, but it gives you an idea). You'll be able to figure out which ones she doesn't do.

867-5309 JENNY – Tommy Tutone
AMERICAN GIRL – Tom Petty
ANYWAY YOU WANT IT – Journey
ARE YOU GONNA BE MY GIRL? – Jet
AUTHORITY SONG – John Cougar
BACK ON THE CHAIN GANG-The Pretenders
BAD GIRLS – Donna Summers
BARRACUDA – Heart
BECAUSE THE NIGHT – Patti Smith
BEVERLY HILLS – Weezer
BIG BALLS - AC/DC
BITCH – Meredith Brooks
BLUE ON BLACK – Kenny Wayne Shepherd
BOOGIE OOGIE – Taste of Honey
BRING ME TO LIFE – Evanescence
BROWN EYED GIRL – Van Morrison
CALL ME WHEN SOBER – Evanescence
CELEBRITY SKIN – Hole
CHAIN OF FOOLS – Aretha Franklin
CRAZY ON YOU - Heart
CREEP- Radiohead
DO YOU FEEL LIKE I DO – Peter Frampton
DON’T YOU WANT ME - The Human League
DON’T LEAVE ME THIS WAY – Thelma Houston
DRIFT AWAY – Uncle Kracker/Dobie Gray
FLAGPOLE SITTA – Harvey Danger
GET DOWN ON IT – Kool and the Gang
GIRLS JUST WANT TO HAVE FUN – Cindy Lauper
GIVE IT TO ME BABY- Rick James
GOODBYE TO YOU – Scandal
HARD TO HANDLE – Black Crowes
HASH PIPE - Weezer
HEARTBREAKER – Pat Benatar
HELL IS FOR CHILDREN – Pat Benatar
HOT STUFF – Donna Summers
I WILL SURVIVE – Gloria Gaynor
I’M JUST A GIRL – No Doubt
CAN'T GET ENOUGH OF YOUR LOVE - Barry White
MAGIC MAN - Heart
Rock and Roll Band - Boston

Veruca Salt rocks.

Janis is always good. Check out some Koko Taylor and Big Mama Thornton, too. Good, beltin'-it-out blues.

Country...Kitty Wells, Pasty Cline, and Loretta Lynn. "You Ain't Woman Enough To Take My Man" is one of the the balls-i-est songs in country music. I like the old-school ladies. When Loretta wore a ballgown, she didn't stand there and look pretty while singing. She *kicked a$$*!

Janis is almost a must do with Female vox.

+1 for Gretchen, try all Jacked Up for a last set tune.

Susan Tedechi - Hurts So Bad

There are numerous bands here in my city that have female vox that do Alright Now and Sweet Home Alabama so those staples/chip shots don't have to drop out just because.

Any of the Bon Jovi tunes done by the girls from last week's American Idol are obviously free game.

Thanks people this is great, I'm going to print out a bunch of it. Yes I can tanspose, I'll have to do it for the guitarist. I don't think he visits here, so I'll go ahead and say, I am better than him. I've also been doing it a lot longer. I just want to carry the bottom in a band, I'll still play guitar to write, teach the guitar player songs, and for my own enjoyment. I'd rather perform on Bass.

It's really a Talk Talk song, but I love the bass line in "It's my life". Most people nowadays know it from No Doubt. Perfect example of a female vocalist doing a male vocal song well. Well enough a lot of people don't know Talk Talk did it first.

BTW, yeah I could search google and wiki, that misses the point of this thread, TB has Bass players in working cover bands that know what to play to get invited back. I value the opinions of my fellow TB'ers.

Evenescence for sure. Heavy stuff but the vocals are great if she can pull it off.

Garbage and the Cranberries are cool, but a bit late 90's.

Some older No Doubt might be kinda cool. Spiderwebs, just a girl, etc.

Yeah we'll have to sneak in Gretchen, L7 we'll just have to pretend we are dead , Joan Jett is playing here soon (she's my age, I wonder how she looks?). Scandal, I was thinking Warrior? Maybe that and Good Bye to You. Breeders, then it's me playing a chicks part. Oh, Lucuna Coil? She can do Flyleaf, I don't know about Cranberries, she has a distinct style. Garbage is good. Frampton? Pixies? I think only hardcore music lovers know them, I could be wrong. I have 3 of their CD's but I don't know anyone else that does.

I've seen Hole mentioned a couple of times. I've never given them a chance. Celebrity Skin huh. I'll have to give a listen.

So do I mate. I wasn't saying "shove off and go there", I was saying "Here, have some resources!". Thats why I wrote all the bands off the top of my head first, then offered you the opportunity to research your own choices at your leisure with some convenient links. Thats all I was saying, honest.

People take me hard on here I find. I must be coming across as prickly or something. I don't mean to.

Joan Jett's just a couple of years older than I am, and she looks *amazing*. MAN, it ain't FAIR! LOL!

Personally, I think Courtney Love should stick to acting.

we do Voices Carry. Never got much of a response, although I personally like the song. We're likely going to drop it.

we did come up with a couple new ones that we're going to learn more well known for their original male singers:

Helter Skelter - pat benatar did a version that allows us to keep it kinda female, yet it's a real, rip 'em up song closely associated with the beatles.

Can't get enough of your love, babe -- yeah the barry white tune. Taylor Dayne covered it in the same key (and yeah an octave higher! hehe). I think it may work.

I used to sing "Helter Skelter" when I fronted a band, back in the day. LOTS of fun, that song.

Another one our female singer does...Lenny Kravitz' "Mr. Cab Driver". Cool song.
