What bass to take for a Pop Concert Gig??

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi guys, i have recently been hired to be a temp bass player for a upcoming Canadian pop singer. I've been in a dilemma since the huge outdoor gig is on the 27th of this month and as much as i like my 6-string basses, i dont think i can take them to a pop gig.

I've been debating getting a Fender P or a Fender J (4-string) just in the name of image alone. Any other recommendations??
(For the record i do own a MIM Fender Jazz V but its strung with flats so that might not work too well for this kind of music)

For something like this restring your jazz

sounds like you're wanting gear for a short term gig.

I use random gigs as excuses to get gear all the time! It's perfectly normal for GAS afflicted bassists...

I bought a brand new Macbook when I was hired to write a film score for a short horror movie. Probably unnecessary, but worth it in the end!

To the OP, I think you could throw some rounds on your jazz and be good to go. But if you need the excuse, this would be a good gig for a new Fender!

I don't see the problem with a 6er for pop music, It's not my sort of thing, but I'd swear I've seen guys on tv playing pop on 6ers more than a few times.

I'd say take what you're most comfortable playing.

+1 on all of this. No one's going to look at you sideways if you show up w a good sounding bass that fits the music.

Matt Bonelli of the BeeGees uses a Lakland 55-94. That's pretty pop. If I were you, I'd just go with my sixer, as long as it can get a pop tone.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. But I'll re-string the jazz for this one.
