I was just wondering.
Most soundmen have told me they want my peak levels, so I'll play some slap. Usually Stanley Clarke's "Silly Putty" then I'll play Jaco's "Continuum" so they see and hear that I play harmonics as well. So it's not all sub bass for the show.
How about you guys? |

How about you guys? | I just do a walking line.. nothing in particular.. I just go for a walk.
When we do soundcheck with just me & the drummer we might do some Herbie Hancock or Led Zep or James Brown.

I play something from Tommy Shannon, like Pride and Joy, Couldnt' Stand the Weather, or Cold Shot. |

It's covers a fairly broad tonal range and is good to get a max-level.
...and I like to play it.

| | gone to Longstanton Spice Museum | | Join Date: Feb 2003 Location: UK | | | I usually play a bunch of low stuff on the E and A strings, give em a bit of staccato with space between the notes too.. dunno why but I think the sound guy can hear the quality of the tone better if there's silence in between rather than a continuous stream of fast notes
but we own our own 5k rig, so for most of the venues we play, it's our own stuff, so we're very well organised and there's not much to work on... my soundcheck maybe lasts 10 seconds... it's a DI out of my rack, and there's no eq or compression on the desk to mess with... just get a level and away we go

| | | | One verse and one chorus of Ramble On by Led Zeppelin. Gets the highs and the lows. And it's a lot of fun to play (especially since the band doesn't do that song). |

I normally start a relatively slow progression of crotchets on a single note (A = 55Hz works well for me) so that the person on the desk can get a good baseline setting. I'll then give them a few snippets of the various lines I'm expecting to play that evening, trying to cover the various techniques and FX I'll be using.
By the time I've done that, it's normally someone else's turn and then time for the whole band (where, again, we'll normally pick something from that evening's set).

I usually try to get that one old drunk in the back, who's been sitting there all day, to go yeeeaaahhh. Or, yell something similar. Devil Horns are also an acceptable response.

I've never actually given any thought to what I should play, I just play something. In most cases not even a song. |
