What to charge a venue?

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm in a relatively new original music band, so we usually only get paid a cut of the door, which can be almost nothing sometimes. But we were offered a gig and the booker asked, "What do you charge?". This is totally new for me and I don't know how to answer. We don't want to overcharge ourselves out of the gig, but we also don't want to undersell ourselves either.

Any ideas? We're in Southern New England and will do one set.

I know the answer to this can vary depending on your area, though I would appreciate any input anyone from any area has. Also, we have put out the question to various musician friends to get their input as well.

We are in the same area. Typically, my original bands get offered $100 in a scenario like this (normally we do the door or a cut of the bar or both). We do not have a big draw (a few people to maybe 20). If you have a pretty big draw, you can ask for a bit more, maybe $200? I don't think that would scare anybody off, you can add in that the price is negotiable if you sense hesitation.

My 2 cents.

If you are good solid musicians, you want $100 per musician at the least.

Market value, as mentioned.

When starting out we generally looked for around $1 - $200. Now, a little more established, we usually look for about $350 - $400 for local shows, and $4 - $500 for larger shows with bigger out of town bands. This is quite good for around here and you wouldn't get any more until you've moved away and come back to play.

Glad I don't live in the Northeast!! My band requires guarantees at least $500...our door deals usually yield $800-1700 depending on the night and place. For gigs at new places, we still have to get at least $400...even out of town gigs, which in the grand scheme of things is nothing.

$100 a man if you are a serious band, but some places will laugh at you as they call the next band if you tell them that.

Smith's Olde Bar....my least paying gig ever....I think we made $20 there TOTAL ($4 a man!!)

Actually, I'm in Boston, which as everyone knows, is completely overstuffed with musicians of all kinds. So there is no way we could get $100 per musician, unless we were a wedding band, in which case, we could probably get more than that! Depending on the venue, cover bands do pretty well, but as I said, we do original music. Funny thing is, around here, no one wants to hear cover bands, but original musicians don't get paid sh*t, unless you happen to get a door cut, which could be nothing or $100, depending on the night!

This venue that asked us what we charge is in Providence, RI. No venue around Boston would ever ask us what we charge!
