What to do about our drummer?

Sign in to disble this ad
I play in a three piece band with my brother (guitar, vox) and one of my best friends (drummer-who I played another band with prior to forming this group). We've been together about a year. Everything is going well; we've recorded some really cool stuff, played some gigs etc. Things are beginning to pickup. But we have one problem. Our drummer is a little flaky. Sometimes he misses practice, says he can't make it and tries to change the day of practice (we rehearse at my house) the night before. Before our last show he didn't show up for two of the four practices leading in. Just really unreliable. He's a good drummer with a unique style (which we all like), and like I said I've known him forever (Our father's played in bands together) and he's been my friend as long as I can remember. My brother and I are the sole songwriters of the group, and I guess I act as band manager (getting gigs, scheduling rehearsal, recordings etc, managing webpage etc). His actions frustrate both me and my brother. What should we do?

Pretty much like any other "help, this guy isn't quite what we want in a bandmember", is that you give him a few guidelines that the band follows by. If he doesn't stick with them, then boot him.

I find it best to be open about these issues. Talk to him. But also remember that, to him, his point of view is just as valid. Try to be firm yet understanding. Fights start when people don't listen to each other.

Simple
Shape up or ship out. Flaky members are a pain!

Did you say "flaky" and "drummer" in the same sentence? How weird is that?

Get used to it.
