hey, i've just got back together with a guitarist who went to austrailia for a year and got back a few month ago, me, the guitarist and the drummer were the makings of a band, the drummer and guitarist have been mates for a long time and me and the guitarist are practicly mates (the drummers my cuz) and after ages of not writing any songs, weve decided were gunna try and get our old songs sorted, write new songs, get an albums werth of songs and hopefully find a singer. I really like pretty much every song weve made, exept now the drummer is playing guitar more than drums and has been for a while now, and he's starting coming up with riffs he wants to turn into songs etc, he's came up with some pretty good stuff and i've put bass lines and melodies i really like to some of them, but he just doesnt have the funk you could say lol, he's got this one funky song on the guitar he wants me to put bass to, (which he loves) i have bass for pretty much all of it now, but its such a cheesy riff on the guitar, it really isnt funk, i've heard it alot now since putting bass to it and this song is really annoying lol, the're both not really into funk, the closest thing to funk they like is probably the chili peppers, basicly when they try to play funk, its always a cheesy riff over and over. I really dont wonna put this song on the album, another thing is the guitarist also really likes it, so i think it is deffinitly gunna get used, i dont mind helping him out by putting bass to it, but the song will just spoil the album if it makes it on, i could just picture it when we're playing this song live, a bunch of white boys, looking like idiots on stage trying to pull off this so called funk song.

i suppose this is just kind of a rant lol, i have nothing against either of them at all, has anyone had any similar situations, how did you deal with it?

You could either axe the song, the drummer, or just play an equally cheesy bass line.

Try playing it a 76 Bpm.

Try Swinging the 16th's (funk shuffle/GoGo/Hip Hop)

Encorage the guitar line to but cut in half or make a variation that happen every other or every forth bar.Creating a 2 or 4 bar phase.

Try to create the ilusion that your still playing his part but find a way to make it breath.

Try one or all of the above....

Remember Most of all it's not What you play but how you play it.

Aj
