| | | | What would you do in this situation? Hi bass brethren,
Semi band woe once again.
Quick summary: small start up band covers band, 4 members - 2 band members have significant stage experience, two not so much, however have been rehearsing quite well together for 3-5 months. We currently have about 21 songs ready to go.
Lead singer goes and books us in for a local street gig scheduled for two months time. We all agree to do it at rehearsal.
Last night she messages me to tell me it pays $200.00 and there's no PA. I tell her we all have our own equipment (meaning us, guitar, drummer and me - basically having a dig that we've all invested in our craft, whereas she hasn't), and can she hire one? She still says no. I then tell her I have small amp she can borrow (it's a small outdoors cafe style gig), she then tells me it's not worth it and that we should find a groovy venue to play in etc. in the future. when I suggest we should do it for practice, she still doesn't want to do it, but then suggests we drive for an hour FOR FREE(!) to do this stupid open mic a friend of hers runs... CAN YOU MAKE SENSE OF THIS OR WHAT?!
I've reached the stage where I'm just hanging around because its good practise for me. Two things I think she should have done:
1. before "booking" this gig: asked about PA first, then
2. asked all band members whether to cancel before making up HER mind that we're to doing it.
Given our situation, would you have done the gig? Bearing in mind she has 20 years experience in singing and we all derive our income from other sources.
Please share

If you book a gig, you should follow through. Period. |

My point is, would you do it for $200 given we're a start up band and could do with the practise and she could have plugged her mic into my small amp and it prob, would have sufficed.

Though, as a singer I can understand not wanting to sing though a small amp.
However, for the money, Id still take the gig.

Seems to me that it's time for a band meeting. Don't be passive-aggressive like she's been. You all need to speak up if you want things to run differently.
Why does she think/believe she can start booking gigs without band approval?
Also, IMO, you guys accepted her in the band w/o a PA so whining about it is off the table.
Seems like your band should be having fun instead of unplanned probems/drama.
If there's no plan, (especially a written one), plan to fail.

As i said, I'm just about at stage where I'm just going to go to reheasals just for the practise. If she raises gigging issues again, I'll insist on a written plan.

If you guys can't get on the same page now then you won't waste any more time. |

| If it was booked YES - if I didn't already own PA equipment, I would have rented one.
In the past when you all get together, what has she been singing through?
PS - don't ever let her manage band bookings again!!!

I'm just kinda burnt out dealing with her many dramas, being the glue that holds this band together, and motivating this band through this lack of direction. As I said, happy to turn up to rehearsals and will see if I can be bothered putting anymore energy into this band.

Your band name is out there...............no matter who booked it............to me that is totally unprofessional...........in Cleveland, where I love & play out............word woul d get out quick about a band booking gigs than cancelling out.
Just my opinion. |

I love this string. I had a conversation recently about how we can arrange a practice without inviting a good friend because he will bring down the level of play. As I had the discussion, I though about how we sound like a bunch of teenage girls (no offence meant to any teenage girls on this board).
Unfortunately, it seems these situation are endless and if I manage to get out of a band before someone gets in a fist fight, I consider it amicable. |
