Where do you find lighting people?

Does your band have a dedicated lighting person?

In a recent thread about trying to get bigger turnouts,
Some mentioned having a dedicated lighting person who knows the songs etc.

So, how does a band go about finding a lighting person?
Where'd you get yours?
Where would a band start looking?
What kind of pay would be expected?

I have not done the big light show thing for many years now due to economics for not paying another person. People want the music to sound good first but a great light and visual effects man can really add to the show aspect.

I used to put a lot of money and work into creating lighting shows for my bands and had the ultimate light man for many years and the audience members would take notice of his great work. If you can find a buddy who is not necessarily a musician, who wants to hang around with the band, be a part of the show, has a sense of timing and the songs, and wants to work hard to help produce the show, that is the guy you want as your light man. The pay should be comensurate with the amount of work and experience they provide.

yeah......cause a stage or film guy will cost way too much.....if you have a bud like rich says he may view it as an opportunity to learn lighting,so you both get something positive

Look for community theater groups. Most of them get paid the same as most musicians.

Whatever you decide to do, don't ask for Christian Bale's advice.

weeelllllll it's tough.....

what you really need is a fan....or someone interested in "the scene" who is willing to work for little pay, experience, and fun...a non professional per say...

your other option is a professional.....and expect to pay a professional rate.....and if your making $300 - $600 a gig for most gigs....do the math

We use a production company for all of our shows, the same 2 guys come out to every show, one does sound and one does lighting. It's not cheap, but we book a lot more, bigger shows because of it.
