I'm on the fence here.
For the past few years I've by default ended up being the front guy, more or less. With the current line up, we (bass, drums, guitar...no dedicated singer) all sing lead but I generally sing less than the other two.
I'm a pretty good talker, but the sense of humor is dark/sarcastic (to say the least) and while I usually get some laughs I also get a lot of "dog being shown a card trick" looks. This is probably my fault for not playing to the room, but I don't have much of a filter so if I notice or think of something I'm going to say it.
My point is, has anyone in a similar situation ever just wanted to shut up, stand by their amp and play it Entwistle for a while? We're playing covers in bars so *some* level of interaction is needed.

I ended up doing it because I had the most stage experience amongst the band members. I usually tend to use self-deprecating humor and get a few laughs. I also make fun of our drummer a lot, I don't know why, it just seems to come out a lot when we're on stage. Anyway, I don't mind doing it, but I'll be happy when we have a singer and I can just Entwhistle it up like you said. |

| | | | Am I the only bass player who likes being up front? The other two guys in my band are charismatic and more handsome than me, but when someone in the audience with a big mouth earns a quick comeback, I usually step up to the mic and blast em. All of us talk tot the crowd, and the guitarist and I share lead vocals duties. The drummer could easily sing lead too, but we keep him busy. |

One of my favourite local bands' frontman is paralysed from the waist down and (as you'd expect) wheelchair bound. This guy is a crackin' frontman, no idea how he does it, but damn, he captures an audience perfectly.
For us, our lead singer is the frontman, following the tried and tested method for our style of music. It works for a reason. Though, being backing vocalist, I do some of the talking with the crowd occasionally, the others don't have mics.

If it's not a "look, he's in a wheelchair" type of thing then that is cool as hell in a "We don't care if it's cool or not" sort of way. I love when people just do what they want for the sake of the music.
