Examples, Doobie Bros., Greatful Dead, Allman Bros (?)
What is the point in having two drummers in one band? This question assumes they are playing the same beat... just doubling up. Also, obviously a percussionist as well as a drummer is a different story. I've always liked the sound of older Santana albums and Pat Metheny stuff where both a percussionist and drummer was utilized.

They Do often play "similar" beats, but not usually EXACTLY the same (except maybe when the whole rest of the band is playing a lick together) . . . |

and to answer your question, isn't it just as easy to ask "Why do some bands have two guitarists?" It's to thicken up the sound of the parts they play in unison, and to allow for more sonic exploration when they're not.
Drums are just an instrument, if you can pull off having two, why not? |

Drums are just an instrument, if you can pull off having two, why not? | This is the correct answer here.
Another possibility is one drummer is more technically proficient while the other is more groove-oriented and they switch off on songs or even parts of songs (I've done this on occasion, it's quite a bit of fun). |

Great band, amazing drummers.
There's just something about two skilled drummers playing together that just makes you feel all right. Double the groove, double the pleasure.
I love it when one drummer plays a beat on the hi hats or stepped hats, and the other brings in the ride cymbol... mmm.
I'd love to have a 2 drummer band but decent drummers are hard to come by in any town. |

Damn, KC is one pretentious band. |
