Why do some bands have two drummers?

Sign in to disble this ad
Examples, Doobie Bros., Greatful Dead, Allman Bros (?)

What is the point in having two drummers in one band? This question assumes they are playing the same beat... just doubling up. Also, obviously a percussionist as well as a drummer is a different story. I've always liked the sound of older Santana albums and Pat Metheny stuff where both a percussionist and drummer was utilized.

But in all of your examples (as well as in Joe Cocker's Mad Dogs and Englishmen, for another example) the drummers DON'T "play the same beat"!
They Do often play "similar" beats, but not usually EXACTLY the same (except maybe when the whole rest of the band is playing a lick together) . . .

Another band who've started doing that are The Melvins...

and to answer your question, isn't it just as easy to ask "Why do some bands have two guitarists?" It's to thicken up the sound of the parts they play in unison, and to allow for more sonic exploration when they're not.

Drums are just an instrument, if you can pull off having two, why not?

Why not? It's music they can do whatever they want.

This is the correct answer here.

Another possibility is one drummer is more technically proficient while the other is more groove-oriented and they switch off on songs or even parts of songs (I've done this on occasion, it's quite a bit of fun).

Drummers are hard to find so it's good to always have a spare, just in case. And it makes many other bands feel inferior because they know how much trouble they had finding just one drummer.

Next you're going to ask why Slipknot has 9 members and 3 drummers.

Let it be, man, let it be.

As others have said, those bands don't double up the same beat. In fact, in the Dead's case it often adds a polyrhythmic element, especially in the free jams.

Because it's awesome.

c.f., Do Make Say Think.

Great band, amazing drummers.
There's just something about two skilled drummers playing together that just makes you feel all right. Double the groove, double the pleasure.

I love it when one drummer plays a beat on the hi hats or stepped hats, and the other brings in the ride cymbol... mmm.
I'd love to have a 2 drummer band but decent drummers are hard to come by in any town.

watching a band with 2 awesome drummers is great.. managed to see the melvins last year with 2 drummers and it was very entertaining.. plus on the cd you can tell their are 2 drummers from the sound and the way everything was mixed and panned... sounds great imo

A version of King Crimson had 2 drummers, 2 guitar players and 2 bass/stick players. They could play like one big ensemble or two trios simultaneously.

Damn, KC is one pretentious band.
