Sign in to disble this ad
Ok, we covered why some of don't like to gig.

Let's flip the coin, and discuss why we do it and what we like about gigging.

Due to an internal drive that kicked in around 11 or 12 years old. It's my passion to perform music with others for others, preferably music that brings a little joy to everyone involved.

The times I really get in the zone is most often with an audience.
I am really an introvert so it's not the need for mass acceptance or interaction. Once off the stage I tend to hide out. After all these years I still can't put my finger on it. Big crowd, small gathering, it doesn't seem to matter.

No matter how much bs you have to put up with band drama, bad bars, dragging gear into a club in a snow storm and everything else.

It still beats the heck out of sitting in your man cave and playing by yourself.

When the downbeat hits and the people start dancing and getting into the music it makes all the bs worth it.

Choose? Its not a choice, but rather something I have to do. Otherwise, my life is a little bit more empty.

For me it's a combination of things.

I love seeing people party and knowing your providing a vehicle to help them party.

It's the best test ground for all of the bands material.

Playimg out is one of the ways I test my gear out.

I love the attention

This sums me up exactly, and here I thought I was odd. Are you me?

It's something that not a lot of people can do, or are willing to take the risk to do.

I'm a narcissist.

I want people to hear my music.

It's a huge adrenaline rush.

I disagree, I think (like with many things) most anyone could perform music if they put their mind to it. Some do, most don't. You make time for what is important to you.

I get a lot of satisfaction out of bringing happiness to others (which is why I also enjoy cooking). Being able to do that along with the team dynamic of a band situation is very fulfilling to me.

No, but I'm convinced we are the minority. The way I see it you've got entertainers and you've got artists. For any artist I think it it all happens internally. Influenced by the external for sure, but that is not the reason for doing what you do. Maybe that is a whole 'nother thread!

I perform because I love the pressure of being on-stage and getting to add a visual element to my music. The bigger the crowd, the better

For me this is the truth. You don't choose to be a musician, you are or you aren't... the question is, what are you going to do about it?

Why and oh why..

1) Well, we really enjoy the act of making music
2) It is a calling, you wouldn't understand.. we're like priests but without the celibacy and fundamentalism part..
3) A band has to gig or it isn't a band.. exceptions to this clause include bands like the Beatles who stopped gigging but kept on writing and recording new music..
4) It beats cleaning toilets for a living.. well, most of the time..
5) Chicks man.. Chicks..
6) Where else can I make funny faces, dance in a strange fashion and still not get laughed at..
7) Because there is a part of our brains that must be satisfied by making music.. if it isn't fed, we turn into zombies..

+1

I have friends that are fine musicians but they refuse to deal with all the things you mentioned.

To me what I get out of live performance out weighs all the crap I put up with.

I think that being a musician and being someone who plays gigs are not necessarily interchangeable terms.

Music is an auditory art form and putting on a show is of course performance art.
Being up on stage is obviously a combination of both.
