Why do you play bass in a band??

This is sort of related to the cover band / original band thread. Some common themes expressed in that thread are "Cover Bands Are Where the Money is" or "Artists Don't Do Other Peoples Music".

So I'm curious. I like to play for fun and profit. Why do you do it??

My band doesn't really play music I like, I joined because I enjoy playing, it's more fun playing with humans than a stereo/metronome, and it's a good experience. Learned a lot of things just by playing with them.

+1, and expand to include: I love to gig. I play in a band because I love being on stage and I love giving the audience some good music and I love getting the feedback from the audience.

I'm in a band because some guys from work needed a bass player, and I just happened to be the first person to walk into the break room.

I play for the pure charge I get out of it. The coin is nice, but it's not decisive. I don't need music to make a living. It's purely a weekend thing for me. A passion, nothing more

I've played in a redneck rock'n'roll band for 26 years, but my regular playing now is in a praise band. Returning the gift I have been given, so to speak!

If you're not in band to get chicks, you're doing it wrong!

As already said, playing bass by myself doesn't sound as good without my band. The drummer told me before we all got together "you should pick up a bass and let me know how that works out for you". I wouldn't be playing bass or be in a band if it wasn't for him and I get to play with some of the coolest cats around here.

I love the low end..

So far Love is in the lead

Love is winning by a landslide. So if we're mostly playing for the love of it, why all the Cover / Original hate??

Opinions?

just like the "what's the definition of a musician?" thread. Mostly it's pure snobbery.

*shrugs*

I do what I do and it's working really well. People can wank themselves all day long trying to "make it" with originals - has nothing to do with me, so I don't really care. It's not my side of the street.

and to add - I play bass because it's the only instrument I ever wanted to learn. I was fascinated by the tones Geddy Lee was getting out of his Ric. I was hooked.

Because it's fun. I love playing bass and I love the stage time.

Just to point out my stage addiction... I used to be in theater. I even traveled to Scotland for some stage time.

I play bass cos of flea, the awesome looking royal blue/white pearloid/maple jazz copy in my local music shop I got 8 years ago, and the way it rumbles the floor.

Meeting some a cool lass that loves Fugazi out of it wouldn't be so bad though
