During a jazz gig, it was time to play So What. The keyboard player says, "This one's all about the bass."

The drummer says, "All about the bass? That must be why it's called So What."

I have been told this a lot. For me, once I get comfortable with my drummer and guitarist, I like staying where I am. Of course, if the attitude is good... I just don't like playing in a hundred bands at the same time. I will fill in here and there for a very few other bands, but I like the band I am in. I think that as a bass player, that would be why we would be hard to find. We get into a band and keep with it. If we find a drummer we work well with, we stick with it.

If I lived in your town, your problem would be solved. I am on the opposite side of the problem you are facing: a bass player who can't seem to find a band! I think its fairly hard to get the message out there. I have put ads up a music stores and such, but either people don't see the ads, or they are skeptical of the player's abilities or attitudes.

I am new to town, and I think that it is hard to "get your name out there". So you get a situation where those musicians that are in greater demand (ie. bassists, drummers, and the rarest of all...the GOOD lead singer) play in several bands at the same time. They, of course, can only play in so many bands, but people have heard them and know their reputation and judge all others against them...so it becomes very difficult for the new musician's, in that they have to almost "prove" themselves through some sort of unwritten "right of passage" or something. At least thats how it seems around here...
