Win some, Lose some.

Just got a message from a band I was subbing in for, they are going with different lineup.
I was suppose to rehearse with the band over the weekend to go over the set list for next weeks gig.
I just learned over 36 songs that are not in the genre that I usually play or listen to,not too difficult but still needed to get familiar with form of the songs.
I had one rehearsal with the band and they gave me the impression they were fine with my playing and singing. I was upfront with explaining that I couldn't commit to being a full time member, but was good for the single gig that I was called to do.
Oh well, I just expanded my repertoire so that is a bonus at any rate. Not a total waste of time but I'm out for $$ spent on downloading all these songs off iTunes and gas spent travelling to and from practice.
Anyone else have this happen to them?

I haven't had it happen but I have spent time learning songs only to show up at an audition and find out that the band was terrible. Now, I will only audition if a band sends me some recordings or links to a site where I can hear what they sound like.

Bah, that sucks. I haven't had sub gigs and therefore haven't had one pulled from under me, but I've had auditions scheduled, invested time learning the set list, and then had my audition canceled when the band basically hired the first guy to walk in the door. It stinks but you have the right attitude; you learned some stuff and expanded your repertoire, so there's always a silver lining.

Don't spend money downloading from iTunes any more. Torrents are the way to go.

It wasn't a great paying gig to begin with, next time I will ask for half the money upfront to determine how serious they are with hiring me.

If you don't want to steal music, Spotify works very well for learning new songs. Best $10 a month I spend towards music.

It's not stealing. It's file sharing.

And it's not for consumer consumption. It's to learn to play the song.

Do you pay BMI and ASCAP every time you play somebody's COPYRIGHTED songs?

I just love the selective morality lectures we get on this and other internet sites.

Here's a quick quiz for you:

If you lend me your Aerosmith CD, and I copy it, did I steal music? Should I be prosecuted?

Should you, also, for lending it to me?

What if you lend it to me, and I don't copy it, but I commit all the songs to memory? Did I steal it then?

I want to support the artist who wrote the songs, I don't mind paying for the songs. It's all good.

I'm just saying' it would have been nice to play em' after learning them. Putting the songs into practical use, that's all.

As I understand it a live music venue pays a licensing fee that covers the BMI/ASCAP payment so in effect - yes.

Not that I'm trying to throw gas on the fire, just adding my 2 cents.

I don't think that distinction exists, legally.

Yes. I only play in venues where the appropriate licensee has been purchased.

Legally, yes it is stealing. It is unlikely to get prosecuted for a single song, but a number of high profile cases have demonstrated that you can be successfully sued for stealing music via torrents.

Apples and bowling balls.

Only thing I have to say to you is this:

Say you're in a band with a decent following in a city. You've spend thousands of dollars and hours recording your first album.

You release it only to have one person buy it then burn it and give it to all his friends. They in turn burn it and give it to theirs and so on and so forth.

As a band trying to make it, especially as a young band with not much income. That would piss me right off.

The way I do it is I torrent the album. If I like more than 2 songs then on my next paycheck I buy the CD copy.

If you absolutely insist on torrenting 100% then at least go see the band live, buy a t-shirt, tell your friends about them. Do SOMETHING in exchange for that free CD.

Sure...if you don't mind exposing your comuter to viruses.

There's a new invention that I use for songs I need to learn but would never buy. It's called Youtube.

I think the issue is if you are only downloading the song to learn it for a gig, and you have NO intention of listening to it ever again... (not saying this is right,) Personally I just use YOutube to learn it.

Well, this thread's going to hell in a hurry...

OP-
Sounds like you've got a good attitude about this. Keep all your charts, notes, what-have-you because you may need them later on. When you freelance you can never know too many tunes especially in a new style you normally wouldn't play.

(For the record, I YouTube it when necessary. Helps when live versions are different, etc..)

Been there, done that, got the tee shirt. Recently.

And as the other poster mentioned, I have also worked like hell to get all the leads down in a 30-song set only to show up for the first practice and find the rest of the group sucked so bad I was embarassed for them.

In 30+ years, I've probably seen it all.

Grooveshark is a good tool also for learning songs without the requirement of downloading.
Similar to spotify.

I'm no stranger to subbing in for other bassists, I've gone into some gigs(last minute type emergency gigs) not knowing a single song and playing by the seat of my pants... very nerve wracking, and something I don't like doing. I like going in prepared and performing to make the band sound great.
I will try YouTube next time.
thanks
