"Worship Music" at a birthday party???

Sign in to disble this ad
So, my band just got our second gig doing music at a birthday party. Only problem is that we're a worship band. We do tend to play in more of a rock'ish edgy type style, so we've taken a lot of traditional worship music and kicked up quite a bit and made it more fun for us younger people. Well my wife gets a call from one of her (older) friends who has a daughter turning 16 and asks if we can do play at her party. I called her and said, "You know we play worship music??" and she said yeah, but that's what my daughter likes and she likes how you guys do it. So we're planning on doing a few songs that we're familiar with, but anyone out there have any suggestions?? They want christian music, but they don't mind some mild stuff either. We like doing songs like "Blessed be your name" by matt redman and "My savior, My God" by aaron shust.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. This is the first time we're playing in more of a performance type mode.

add some stuff like "I am Free" or other Newsboys stuff... that'll get em hoppin', if that is what you want... We just added that and Rush of Fools' "We All"... there is plenty of upbeat, simple stuff that you oughtta be able to rock...

How deep a level of worship are we talking about?

Like skim-the-surface level or intensive mind-blowing level?

Try to throw in a little CCM, (contemporary christian music), stuff in there too like maybe some Casting Crowns or Shane and Shane stuff, maybe not that exactly but something along those lines. That'll liven it up a tad. How about some Skillet stuff or Barlow Girl maybe? There's tons of options, just listen to the radio. I like Leeland stuff a lot and they can get pretty upbeat too.

If you know the David Crowder Band, I would go with some of their faster stuff. It is always fun for my Youth Group and lots of fun and challenge with the music itself.

Lord's really been using us lately and I guess you can say it's getting near "intensive mind-blowing level." At least, I'd like to think. This past sunday's set was...

Trading my Sorrows
--Announcements--
Sing to the King
Better is One Day
Here I am to Worship (our remix)
My Savior, My God
All Creatures of our God and King (DCB version)

It was a pretty sweet set. As far as this party goes I think they're looking for that "Happy feeling" type worship music or should I say praise music.

Yeah, all those David Crowder songs are pretty fun.

What an interesting situation. I actually played in a wedding band once. We were all setup to play, but no one wanted to dance, so for some reason, we all just started to vamp on worship tunes and just jam over them.

Often times, at parties, they go a lot longer than expected. I think some jamming over them won't hurt, just add a minute or 10 to the song

Yeah, we're definately going to do some jamming. By contract, we need to play for about an hour but she's only expecting us to sing about 4-5 songs then she said we can just just jam and play background music. It's awesome, she's basically giving us liberty to just have fun and we're getting paid for it.

Dude sweet!

I Feel Free is a good one.
Try Salvation Is Here, that's a great upbeat one!
Glorious One? Majesty?

Been thinking about trying to mix it up a little and do some prepared stuff mixed in with improv and back to prepared. How do you guys do this without leaving your audience standing around wondering when the next song is about to start???

I would be upset if a worship band played at my party. If I went to a party that happened to have a worship band playing I'd probably leave or drink in the front yard, unless it was a hot chick's party and I was likely to hook up with her.
