in 2 weeks at a huge outdoor festival. told that we should expect 5,000-8,000 people in front of us. VIP passes before the show, a dressing room trailer, hospitality tent...*gulp*
Unbelievable. Me. 45 years old and probably never played for more than 500-600 people, and usually played in bars for less than 100. Frequently a whole lot less than that.
opening for Fuel....
And consider the tools and uber-rednecks I had to play with the last couple of years in Jersey, it was extremely satisfying to move and immediately join a highly successful band in the new city, full of nice, mature and talented musicians.
And now this. And it's not just this one time. We have Race Week in Daytona, bike week in Myrtle Beach, and other such huge venues, coming up on the schedule.
It's all quite unbelievable. How will I ever be able to go back to rinky-dink bars after this? It doesn't quite feel like justice, but it does feel very satisfying after what I've been through the last 3 years.
anyway, no question. Just wanted to share.

Learned my lesson here a while back when someone tattled to my band concerning one of my vents here. Not that it mattered. I was already realizing that I was moving away, but it made things unpleasant and I quit earlier than I needed to. So no more personal info here.

And yes, playing bars after the big gigs can be trying, to say the least. But as long as you play for the love of music, it shouldn't matter.
Congrats!

Honestly mate, I have played in front of over 10,000 people on more then one occasion, and from past experience little dinky bars are way more fun. Might sound weird, but Imo thats the truth. But opening for fuel is quite special, so just make sure that you enjoy it and dont take it for granted mate.
Good luck |

We opened for Diamondhead for a week this past summer. Had roadies, the whole 9. That first time I had to lug my friggin cab out to the van after that was heart breaking, but you get over it pretty quickly, then it's business as usual.
congrats on the gig.

And then you're ahh so this is BassGod! Although you probably won't have SC if it's a bunch of bands throughout the day kinda gig. Line check & go.
Outdoor gigs (PA-wise) can sometimes be a little squirrelly, like when you're playing a fund raiser for the town Civitan club and the PA is on tripods but this one should be great with a major headliner. We played a show last year with .38 Special & Orange County Choppers @ the Ft. Knox airfield and the sound (Clair Bro's) FOH & OS was simply amazing. Blew away what we usually get OS at most club dates.
I don't like looking at the crowd from backstage before I play but it might not bother you. I get butterflies/pumped before every show but big ones can really amp me up. I try to stick to the routine, go out front & catch a few bands, play video games/watch tv and then about 30-45 minutes before show we start warming up. BAM! Before you know it it's showtime, you do the show & you're done! BLINK!
I hope I don't seem too over-the-top or bossy about all this. I'm just trying to share my experiences with you. I'm 49 after all...
Have fun & congrats on the gigs!
Oops, one more thing (sheesh) play clean. It will muddy up in a heart beat. Sorry, I'll stop now.

It will be a success if I don't wet myself!
LOL
I'll post the results here after it happens. My wife is going to film most of it -- a nice momento. Perhaps the true apex of my musical sojourn.

Way to go!! Thats gonna be something worth telling again and again |
