Are you able to smoke a cig and play live at the same time ? I used to do this very often playing outside but I allways got the smoke in my eyes when I did this.

I sing a lot so I can't really smoke and do that at the same time. It gets in my eyes as well. We can't smoke in bars up here anymore but if I'm doing an outdoor gig sometimes I spark one up and put the coffin nail between the headstock and top string ala Keith Richards

I am not a smoker these days, but I've tried a few times. Basically- mad smoke in the eyes and nose, end up taking huge drags.

Here in montreal we can't smoke in bars anymore neither. Good thing I quit bout 2 years ago hehe. I never smoked while playing but a friend of mine do it all the time, for some reason it doesn't hurt his eyes....

Sadly, I have done it way too much. I sorta miss those days in a pathetic addicted to nicotine way. I don't mean to preach, and have no right to, yet in honesty, I must quote what Yul Brynner said on the "Tonight Show" as he was terminal with lung cancer decades ago:

"Just don't smoke. That's all I say to you. Just don't smoke."

ps How do you think those old basses got all those cigarette burns?

Nope, it went under the E string. Can't imagine doing that these days.

Done that more than a few times back in the day. I think Clapton did that too.

Zappa would do it too, and when it stopped burning or got to the filter the rest of the band would know he was done his solo.

might not be true, just something interesting i heard.

Around here, no, even if I was a smoker. It's against the law to smoke indoors in public places. But why smoke in the first place?

I can do it, have done it, and will most likely do it again.

Now if I could only figure out how to drink a beer and eat a steak while playing, gigs would be even better.

I can, but not with a cigatette, only with a nice Partagas #6 cigar, or an Acid Cold Tea Infusion cigar, yummy...

The trick is never tilting your head down, this
directs the (still very hot) smoke right at your eyes.

First of all, let me say that this might just be the most educational topic I've ever read.

I, for one, have tried and tried, but I just can't get the hang of it. The worst part is when the smoke gets in your eyes, and you just wanna rub 'em, but it's always at a time where you can't take your hand off the fretboard.

...next gig, I'm bringing a hookah.

All the time. In the age of over-weaning nanny-state, I try to set a bad example whenever possible.

The only problem I've had is I smoke filterless Camels, and they burn all the way to the end. If it's a long tune, I can be in trouble.
