You are the weakest link......

I'm in a fairly new 4-piece cover band. We've put together a lot of good material in 2 months time and have our first paying gig at the beginning of October. We all are fairly seasoned, professional, and serious......EXCEPT.........the rhythm guitarist......

This guy is not pulling his weight. His rig sounds like crap, so he's always fiddling with it, his guitar will not stay in tune, so he's always tuning it, he always has a cigarette hanging out of his mouth which he thinks looks cool but really looks all white trashy (I smoke, but darn looking stupid), he tries to sing but cannot do it in key, it is blatantly obvious he does not learn material at home (it's rehearsal, not practice), he's gotten drunk at rehearsal twice to the point of sloppy playing and the drummer got pissed and would not work on new material because of it, he does not understand dynamics, he does not remember stops, accidentals, changes, etc., our lead guitarist is always having to teach him riffs because he has not learned the material, I always have to yell the current chord to him when he misses the change and looks at me like a deer in headlights, he shuffles around the floor in some weird kind of slew footed white boy dance which is going to get plenty of laughs from the crowd, and in summation, he is doing everything a 15 year old kid does when he gets into his first band and is sooooooooo freakin' excited.... (thanks for letting me vent).....

Why put up with it? Because he is the lead guitarists friend. It is the lead guitarists practice space and PA; and quite frankly we have done too well and sound too good (even with his fudge ups) to have to break in someone totally new. We all just want this guy to be up to par with us, that's all. I can tell he can do it (I have played rhythm gtr for a long time myself), and all he has to do is go home, play along with a CD and learn the songs.

I talked to the drummer and lead guitar last night and told them it was time to give this guy a talking to. Drummer is very discouraged about it and LG thinks the RG does not understand how serious this group is. We're gonna wait till the end of rehearsal, sit him down, and give it to him straight......shape up or ship out. He will have till the first gig to get up to par. If he flubs the gig, then he's gone, or me and the drummer are gone. End of story.....

I know we could go 3-piece pretty easy, but I do quite a bit of lead singing, so I need someone to double the bass line so I can simplify it whilst I croon. I'll let you all know how it goes and thanks for reading. Peace!!

compared to that ... i am not the weak link.

if you have that much to say about the guy ... time to part way's.

My rule of thumb... if you have to say more than "that's a cool cat, he's got chops and has his head on straight" ... you need to move on in some form or fashion

Dude,
Why go through the trouble? You said it all. Life is to short for that kind of **** in a band. I bet you would sound better as a 3 pice than dragging some bad toned, drunk, sloppy guitarist around. If your thinking about this guy when your away from your music just kick him out. I just sacked a drummer that had great feel and time because he was a total ******* to everybody in the band. Once the dark cloud was gone the positive world opened up and I found myself surrounded by cool musicians. Speak your mind, life is too short.

And this is even a question or discussion....why? I think you already answered yourselves a million times over.

Time to go to Craigslist....or THE MODE.

It will only get harder over time. It's early in the history of the band. Do the rest of you a favor, and press the Eject button now.

I right there with all of you, and knew what your replies would be. Since the LG is the "band leader" per se, we're just trying to make sure he supports the decison and this isn't a backing line vs. front line thing. By giving the guy fair warning, and all 3 other members backing the decision, this guy has no choice but to get himself together or leave.

Like all of you, we know how this is going to end. He will either man up and admit he does not have the time, nor inclination to do it right and quit on the spot, or he will be asked to leave within 3 weeks time cause he wrecked a gig (perish the thought). Because of his past behavior, my money's on option 2.........

Again, I know this is a common stupid post and I've dealt with worse in much worse bands, but hey.......everybody likes a good rant every now and again!!!

That was painful to read, people like that can't change enough from talking to them. If you do the 2 guitar thing they HAVE TO BE IN TUNE. And they really need to know dynamics otherwise it is just a cluster F of chaos. Do the 3 peice thing and just work on your singing/playing. I know exactly what you are talking about, there are a few songs I just can't sing and play, but I but if I spend some time on them I would get it.

So he's basically not a musician and clearly could toss the guitar in his closet and forget about it if he lost this band.

He'll be pissed but he's obviously not passionate about playing music. If he does leave I think you guys could make it work as a trio and designate a break in gigs when you decide to find someone else.

Simply, sit him down with other band members. And tell him the truth.
I played with the exact same guy one.
Always blaming gear, never practicing on his own.
Waisting everyones time.
You will never got better as a group, with this guy.
Time for him to go.

I'd do it as a 3 piece. If that's not an option, replace him. If you have paid gigs on the books, you can find a replacement that's better in a few weeks.

don't replace him... figure out how to do it as a trio...

Easier to book... easier money.... less gear... fewer politics.

Unless he has some type of very cool attribute, he may not sell corporate events or beer.

I would have dropped him long ago. It's not personal, it's about the band. We did that to our first drummer - he didn't practice at home. Ever. He said he did, but his kit was in the singer's garage, and he didn't have practice pads at home.

We got a new drummer and haven't looked back.
