Your ideal originals band & your ideal cover band...

For covers, I'd rather be in a tribute band & would love to play either Nirvana or Black Flag covers all night but I'd rather play bass in the Nirvana band & sing in the Black Flag band. Either of those would be so damn much fun.

Originals is easy... What I'm doing now. Really like my guitar player and the music we write.

Covers? I'd love to do alternative rock, like 10 Years and Evans Blue. Originals? Same general sound.

Ideal cover band: Play 2-3x/month with great guys with mature personalities, especially guitarists who understand that rhythm guitar shouldn't be the loudest sound in the mix. Minimal rehearsals to work on new songs and vocal mixes only. Set list consisting of 70s to today pop rock with some 70s funk and a few slammin modern country, throwing out anything that doesn't reliably get people dancing. Play dive bars to large halls no more than 45 minute drive from my house, ending no later than 1:00am with a fast tear-down and exit, for at least $100/man.

My current band is nearly this with a few tolerable deviations, the worst being a loud guitarist.

Ideal original band: Any I'm not in.

I've really been digging bands like Karnivool, Dead Letter Circus and Eenik lately.. I guess my ideal original band would incorporate the stylistic elements from those bands but perhaps with the addition of keys.

Not really sure for covers.. I've done that for so long that it really doesn't have much allure.. It would have to be something special.. I'd like to get a group of people together and play some one-off shows like a tribute to Zappa... Or perhaps something like plying "The Wall" album in its entirety.. An Alice Cooper tribute show on Halloween night.. Something like that... Making it an event with full production, etc...

My ideal originals band will be the one I'm putting together right now, doing hip-hop and reggae -styled stuff with a great like-minded drummer I've found.

Covers... What I'm doing now, street busking on double bass and doing harmony vocals with a guitarist/singer doing old rocksteady and ska tunes (Desmond Dekker, Maytals, Alton Ellis, etc.). I don't really care for covers but we have to get quite inventive with these to make them work.

Covers: Motown / old school funk band with at least 3 horns and at least 3 female singers.

2nd place covers: Steely Dan tribute band

Originals: something that combines funk, hip-hop, go-go rhythms with jazz improvisation, but that isn't fusion. The beats have to be danceable, the melodies hummable, and there can be no samples or tracks used, everything must be played live on a real instrument.
