1) Favourite 2005 releases
2) Older music you discovered in 2005.
There were so many for me, but I'll start off with a select few.
1) 2005 releases:
Alan Broadbent "Round Midnight' (w/Brian Bromberg)
Bill Mays "Live at Jazz Standard" (w/Martin Wind)
Ted Howe "Elton Exposed" (w/John Patitucci)
Larry Fuller Trio "Easy Walker" (w/Ray Brown)
2) Oldies I learned to Love:
Howard Alden & Jack Lesburg "No Amps Allowed"
Miles Davis "My Funny Valentine" (w/Ron Carter)
Gene Bertoncini & Michael Moore "Two in Time"
Honorable mentions:
Best Box Set: Bill Evans "Last Waltz" (w/Marc Johnson)
So...watcha been listnin' to?

Out of 2005 releases... Introducing the Laila Biali Trio
Not sure if this was an 04 or 05, but I saw them (with a sub drummer) live last spring and bought the CD during intermission. GREAT group -- my favourite is their version of Body and Soul, which coincidentally, is the first vocal version I not only tolerated, but really loved. Admittedly, I have not heard any of the old greats sing this particular tune. Thelonius Monk Quartet with John Coltrane: At Carnegie Hall
This is a 2005 release, right?
Older than 05...
Well, this is more difficult. I'll get back to you.

There's also a song by one of those singer/songwriters (Sheryl Crowe?) that is an older tune, I think, 'Soaking Up the Sun' or something like that? That's a pretty good number. Zoot Sims and Annie Ross (around '61, I think), album called 'A Gasser' with Russ Freeman, Mel Lewis and Monty Budwig and friends. |

I've always been distantly respectful of Drew Gress, but with these two recordings I think he is head and shoulders above most jazz bassists playing these days (musically speaking--and what else is there?). He plays no wasted notes, and he always contributes something meaningful to the moment at hand.
Also: that new Fiona Apple recording, "Extraordinary Machine," is quite good. Her voice on the title track is enthralling--the perfect musical instrument. I wish I could convince her to do a standards record with me...
Also, there's this band called The Beatles (sp?), and they did this album called "Revolver" from like a long time ago, and I've been checking it out and it's a real gas... |

Fleck/Meyer - "Music for Two"
Rufus Reid - "The Gait Keeper"
Oregon - "Live at Yoshi's"
Brian Bromberg - "It's About Time"
Yo Yo Ma/ Edgar Meyer/ Mark O'Connor - "Appalachia Waltz"
Even though most of these weren't released in 2005, I was made aware of them then.

Jim Ferguson "Not Just another Pretty Bass" - his ballads are so incendiary - leave it to a bassist
Johnny Frigo "Renaissance Man" and "Johnny Frigo's DNA Exposed" - released when he was ONLY 85 years old
Rabbath's "In a Sentimental Mood" - straight up melodies, I'm digging it
Glenn Kaiser "You made a difference in me" - huge fat sound, Chicago blues/gospel, dripping with horns and Hammond
