Aside from tone, pitch

Aloha Guys,

I added another tune to the myspace page for your amusement

Aside from tone, pitch and phrasing, tell me what you think. In keeping with another thread...it's a real obscure standard

I think the reason it's a duet is because the drummer was late

Anyway hope some of you enjoy it. I of course have all kinds of issues with my playing but I'm not gonna go all neurotic.

Thanks in advance for any thought and/or constructive help

Trey

That sounded really good. The only thing is for some reason during your solo I kept feeling like it was being kind of repetetive. I think it's the way you pretty consistently played short phrases then landed on a note. I think it could use some longer lines.

I hope that's at least a little bit helpful.

Thanks,
Alex

ps. check my recordings too, tell me what you think.

You are 100% right and it's one of the things that I am addressing in my playing. On this cut the pianist and I got into a kind of call and answer thing and I never broke out of it.

Thanks for the input. I appreciate it. I will listen to your tracks tommorow

Trey...Uh, Oh...here I am.
Right to the meat and potato's. When the piano player is doing his thing, IMO, you have to commit yourself to one of three things: Start in two on the head and build it into four. Keep it in broken time, Ala Scott, for the whole reading. Or, use All of the above, BUT don't mix it up during the piano solo. It's confusing....I hear you build up into four at odd places in the form, sometimes for as little as a bar, then drop back into two all of a sudden. This is like pulling the rug out from underneath the piano player. It really makes it hard for the listener as well...Is he gonna? No....Maybe?...Oops, there he goes, what a relief. Oops, not now...Oh NO, not in the middle of the bridge.....etc. ( sound like your wife? VERY similar! )
This is kinda akin to what some drummers do when they don't know the form of the tune. You've heard it before I'm sure....Play a nice two with the brushes, build the tension up to four and BAM! Grab the sticks and go into a hard four ON THE BRIDGE!!!...I've been known to threaten the lives of drummers who pull this ****.
Thas' all for now honey...You still sound good to me.
Love, PW

Paul,

Thanks very much... We should have waited for the drummer! Ha ha
I hear what you're saying loud and clear. It is one of those things that is just not working. Actually I feel there are a few spots where I rush and was prolly trying to fix that on the fly. Your input is greatly appreciated!

Please don't get obsessed with that rushing thing. Some of the most fierce playing I've ever experienced, rushed....BUT swung. What the hell, as long as the guy who's playing the head, can still play it on the out chorus...**** it, just enjoy the ride.

I love it!!!! Think the time thing is from my studio days when everyone including the guy who made the coffee was obsessed with "perfect" time. Played a lot to click tracks on TV & movie dates as well as on records.

Again Unka Paul, your right on and I gotta let go of some bad & stupid habits!

Trey - What UNCA PULL said about the comping, only without the crustiness. On the soloing, I hear you play melodic lines that are really nice, then at times jump back to the bass function for a minute, then go back to playing nice melodic lines. During the solo, I could do without some or most of the "bass function" material, especially in the last 8 bars of the first chorus. I kind of wish the piano player had filled in some of that space for you so you could cruise, but that may not be his thing (or yours!). Anyway, the tone and time feel good on the solo section, and as before, the intonation is dead on. Good stuff.

Thank you all very much for your insights, constructive critiques and encouragement. For me, it is sometimes a far more deeper learning experience to try something and not quite succeed. (a nice way to put it) Especially when there is so much great feedback from you guys. This has helped me clarify certain things about the way this piece was played that really bothered me although I like parts of it. So again, everyone who chose to comment, Thanks so much.

Very nice. I feel strange even commenting 'cause the playing is at such a high level. Here goes.

The only thing I have to add that might be constructive is that I thought the solo was maybe a little busy for my taste. The stuff that you play kills but I wonder that if a tune starts as laid back as that one if I would try for a more lyrical and melodic solo. Just seems a little abrupt coming out of the melody which is pretty sparse.

Killin' though

Thanks Marc,

I kinda think it's back to the drawing board for this one!! "Missed it by that much"
It's been kinda crazy round here lately but I will seriously listen to those tunes in the next few days and get back to you!

Aloha

I don't know man. Sounds pretty killin' to me. When you post and ask for critique we listen for things. I think at a pro level it really comes down to the musical choices each individual makes. Everyone is going to have a different take on a given tune. That's the cool thing about music.
