| Bert Turetzky "Tributes" When I came home this Saturday I had a cd package on my porch from the Maestro.
There is not info about it online so I am guessing it just came out.
it is a cd of tributes to Blanton, Mingus and Ray Brown. Bert started as a jazz player and has stayed active in jazz and improvised music ever since.
He still has his huge sound and beautiful tone. This is far from straight ahead but should still be a fun listen for those coming from that side of things.
It has some of his trademark speaking pieces (one with text by Kerouac) as well as the influence of his work in the extended techniques of modern composition and improvised music.
It includes compositions by Turetzky, Mingus, Blanton/Ellington, Pettiford and Frank Proto.
Bert has also amassed a sizeable discography in improvised music over the last decade. Often in duo or trio with reed master Vinny Golia, but also duo with Geroge Lewis and cd with the King Übü Orchestrü along side Fernando Grillo and many of the leading improvisors in the EU.
He may have retired form UCSD, but not from music.
