A bit of history

There's a nice interview here of Ashley Kahn who wrote "Kind of Blue: The Making of the Miles Davis Masterpiece". He discusses some of the circumstances surrounding the sessions.

I was amazed at how little the sidemen got paid.

Does anyone know about the recording industry at this time? Did these guys see records as mostly advertising for whatever concerts they were doing?

For whatever it's worth, it was just another another gig to jazzers, if you were a guy like PC...obviously, by the amounts of moneys listed. One thing you'd never see, that you see lots of with today's CDs....you'd hardly ever see musicians peddling their own records on a gig. Now days it would be surprising to go to a venue and not see CD's being sold by the artists. These, of course, are self- produced. In the 50's/60's, you did sessions for the recording companies themselves. It was a big deal if you were on a record ( although, the money didn't reflect that) unless you were a big name like Paul that lived in NY or LA.

Now days, CDs are like calling cards!
