Christian McBride and Inside Straight - New Recording!

I just bought Christian's new recording called Kind of Brown recorded with his new new band.

I'm halfway through now and so far it sounds pretty good. Hasn't really moved me that much (yet?) , pretty straight forward stuff. Alot of bass solos too!

McBrides sound has changed quite a lot, now it sounds a lot clearer compared to those older recordings he plays on. Sounds good with the band, maybe a bit too trebly when he goes up the board while soloing...

Needless to say, he is in a leaque of his own with his superhumanish playing. What's up with him getting faster and faster all the time

Any thoughts from other listeners? Didn't find any other threads about this.

His feature in the latest Downbeat is a really interesting read.

I've listened to this CD 3 times in the last 2 days. I really dig the writing. The first tune is heavily indebted to Freddie Hubbard and the most of the rest have a Cedar Walton influence. The playing is fantastic by all involved which include Steve Wilson on saxes and Eric Reed on piano.

I'm a little lukewarm about McBride's tone but I have been since he started using Helicores (from what I've been able to gather he uses Helicores for G, D and E and has an Evah A). His soloing though is amazing. He has unbelievable chops and the ideas to back them up with. When he comps, he grooves with the best of them.

The other CD that I can't get enough of is David Sanchez's Cultural Survival. Killer CD with Ben Street on bass. The band and the writing are absolutely first rate.

You got it. That disc is bad. The guitar player, Lage Lund is in a league of his own. Saw a free show here in town and gotta say, blew my mind.

I dig "Kind of Brown" -- fun CD, as you'd expect when somebody calls their record "Kind of Brown."

"Inside Straight" actually describes the music very succinctly. Nice, tight writing in a variety of accessible jazz styles. Swinging always.

Mr. McBride's soloing is an inspiration. His tone is definitely "thumpier". The result is that when walking he plays on top of the beat in a very bouncy, positive but noticeable way.

I have to think that if he was back to Spiros he could relax a bit and let the note do the work. But I will never achieve on my best day what Mr. McBride sinks to in his sleep, so forget about me!

Been listening to KoB(rown) for a week or 2 now, good stuff!

I liked Camp Meeting, but not as much as this one...

How prolific is McBride right now? Not only is he playing a lot, not only is he recording a lot, but every time I think I have caught up with whatever his current project is, I hear about something totally different he is doing.

When was that?
I don't subscribe to DB and I I just recently read the 75th anniversary issue in the library, was it there?

McBride's walking style and sound are really enjoyable to listen to. It's just swinging!

Uncle James is a great song I think. MY favourite from the record now... I can't resist a good waltz.
I have to go and check out the Antonio Sanchez cd now!

It just came out; I got mine on Wednesday. It's the issue after the 75th Anniversary issue. It might not make across the pond until next week or so though.

I think Kind of Brown is fantastic, and it is great that Christian brought out this very straight-ahead record. He certainly has the clout within the industry to put out any type of project these days—he could do anything he wants. It is encouraging to see him do something close to his heart. He always sounds great.

I thought that the cd was phenomenal. I have to admit the waltz did it for me and i was also impressed with warren wolfe's playing very unique. Man, Christian has chops of steel!
