Christian McBride: Live At Tonic

Anyone heard this yet? I picked it up the other day, and well, it's LONG (3 cd's) and the first cd is over an hour.....that's as far as I've gotten so far.
From a first listen: yeah, that band is smokin, especialy the drummer, Tyrone Gully I think his name is. Anyhoo, lookin forward to the next 2 cd's as well.
One caveat: I thought Christian's upright tone would be alot better live. It's fine, but not blowing me away. HUGE difference from his studio recordings.
Yeah, I know, most people's are.

I've checked it out. I like it a lot. I also think he has a great sound on that CD when you consider the cirsumstances of a loud band in a live recording situation.

funny you say that about his sound - I have seen him in his own band when sci fi came [one of the worse recorded albums in a while given the technology - playing is great] and he really was a mess with his sound, but then saw him with Methany and it may have been some of the best upright playing I have ever seen, very articulate, clean and beautiful.

The "E Jam" on the third CD is incredible. Its 29 minutes of pure groove. DJ Logic, Scratch from The Roots, the guitarist from Soulive (not sure of his name, not worth remembering, IMO), and some others all take solos. It's great.

On the last cut on the first disc, boogie woogie waltz, he and the band are jamming then he jumps on his distortion pedal and starts playing these big 5ths at around 12:03....the world explodes, its so cool!

Eric Krazno - he is worth remembering - if not on this recording (I didnt think he got to shine much either) - then on his various other recordings.

I really dig this set of shows.

The first disc is a combination of the first two sets of the two night show. The 2nd and 3rd discs are the 2nd set of each nights show and were all improv with various guests.

I like Christian McBride, but a recording with Queen Latifah sounds really lame.
