FRANCO PETRACCHI on VIDEO

Dear Forum,
if you like to see Maestro FRANCO PETRACCHI on video, also to give a look to his great and elegant technique, look at here:

http://www.xbass.org/Ita/index.php

Well, it's an Italian journal about classical and jazz double bass with a lot of news (English coming soon!).
Follow me:

1)On the left of the screen you see: INTERVISTE. Well, click on it!

2)Than it'll appear: BOCINI PRESENTA PETRACCHI. You click on it.

3)Last, click on the Video located on the top, and Petracchi will play the 2nd movement of Nino Rota "Divertimento Concertante" for db. and orchestra. Naturally "live".

I hope you like it.

Best regards

Vito Liuzzi

Franco Petracchi/ www.x-bass.org

Dear friends,
I'm really happy you like it! When I'll say to Maestro that you have appreciated his incredible technique, surely, he will be very enjoy. I teach his high technique in my Conservatory and I can say it's very logic. Maestro, also in his comments on x-bass, considers the doublebass' fingerboard like the one of a piano. He uses a lot the thumb in the free fundamental position: "cromatica""semicromatica""diatonica". This to avoid change of position and to achieve a very solid tuning. It's fundamental to study the Fifths' exercise with the two variants and with the anticipation of the 2nd finger in fast passages. Intonation and reinforcement in single fingers will be incredible, on the fingerboard and also in thumb position.

Sorry, I'm writing a lot. BTW, Riccardo Valsecchi and Alberto Bocini will be happy for your comments. I will try to let translate in English this incredible magazine. The only serious magazine about doublebass on the net, in my opinion. When the new number will appear, I'll let you know.
Sorry for my no correct English.

My best regards

Vito (Italy)

It's really incredible. Maestro Petracchi, since a lot of time, plays with a marvellous Gaetano Rossi, not so ancient, but the most incredible think is that he uses Jargar Solo Set Strings from a life. He told me during a private evening meal that Jargar builds this set for him in a different way, and he ghanges them every six months per year. Well, I belivied him, naturally. But I don't like at all them. Beautiful simil-gut sound but not equal on every string. On his instrument they are great. One day, during a masterclass, I had the chance to play this instrument with Maestro'bow (a French bow in all senses ...sorry, I don't remember the manufacture name). I was in a medium all with a good acoustic. Very strange, but normal in my opinion. Maestro Petracchi uses these strings very low; the 1st on it is at mm.3/4 from fingerboard (also sometimes, if you force the "cook in oil"). But I began to play Bottesini Grande Allegro with a pianist. On the place, where I was playing, I had the sensation there was no sound, or a little sound. But my teacher (an old Petracchi student), ten meters far from me, make sure me that the sound arrived powerful, warm and with a great tone.
At the end, what I mean. Generally, good instruments, old or new, seems to play a little bit on the place, but when you play it in a good hall, their sound travels in an incredible manner. Sometimes it's the opposite: on the place you listen to a big sound but it doesn't travel. Naturally it's a question also of technique in bowing (not of bow, it's relative). But the most important thing is the quality of woods. Every wood has got different capacities to "push" the sound. I.E. : Pernambuco in a bow (german or French is no important), the best pernambuco, has a capacity to let travel the sound for 4500/5000 meters per second (and Carbon fibre 7000/7100 m/s ... incredible). So, it's not the instrument shaped that gives tone and powerful, but the high qualities of materials used. Shaped can have a relative importance, not to understimate (like varnish, whose principal stiff is to protect the wood ... a white wood instrument plays better is varnished). From this point of view, violins, violas or cellos have found a relative "standard" shaped, form. It's the qualities of materials to make the difference and little liuther's secrets, naturally. It's not so easy to have a good instrument. In Petracchi doublebass, varnish is not so beautiful, but woods are incredible.
I don't know if he should use D'Addario Solo Set or Pirastro Obligato or other strings. But I'm sure it might be the better instrument in the world, or one of the best

Best regards

Vito Liuzzi

p.s.: an anecdote. Petracchi and Martin were recording the Passione Amorose in London for ASV. Well, Petracchi's Rossi played too powerful in comparison with Martin's one. Sound technician has to use all their "tricks" to have an equilibrated sound. But tone Martin's instrument was much sweeter, with an incredible vibrato that Petracchi doesn't have. Tom's instrument sings you, and it has a great quality (very warm, sweet but non very powerful). It's always a matter of choice: powerful instrument but less quality, or the opposite???

Wink

About another Video of Petracchi with Rocco Filippini, one of the most important cellist in Italy.
Well, on E-Mule if you find for: "Franco Petracchi Rocco Filippini", you can download a marvellous RAI TELEVISION VIDEO of 20 years ago but simply great. Petracchi plays Rossini duetto, Per questa bella Mano by Mozart, Tarantella by Bottesini and much more.
I suggest a fast line (ADSL).
But you can also study the correct posture in a doublebass.

I couldn't find the video on e-mule, could you maybe post a link to it? The other one was awesome, though! Thanks for sharing.

It's very strange! I don't have a link to it. Try in another moment. I don't know why it's no more avaible. The only reason may be this one: one of my friends who garged it on emule and who reads this Forum is Italian. Probably she has decided to leave it for sharing. It's the only logical reason I can have.
Sorry! I have delete it from my computer.

Best regards

The only tag I can give you for researching is this:
[DIVX-ITA]_speciale.RAI_contrabbasso_violoncello.Petracchi-Filippini.by.pabbass

If you don't find anything, I can't help you. And I respect the choice of this my friend of not sharing this video. If this is the reason of your difficulties.

Very sorry.

Wow! The duet with Franco Petracchi and Gary Karr was totally breath taking. It's such a shame that all these amazing players have not toured the U.S. There is a ton of virtuosity in Italy.
