Fundemental Bliss (Please critique)

Alright.. I got an idea stuck in my head this afternoon and decided to pick up my bass and record it. It is nothing original, great, etc etc, and my intonation is a bit off, so feel free to beat me up .

Recording was done with an iriver player playing my Engle M-1.

Thanks for listening and any critiques, advice, etc are encouraged.

*Edit- I noticed the volume is kidna low on the recording, so you may to crank the speakers if you don't have a subwoofer hooked up. I need ot get a decent mixing program...

Nice. I've actually listened a few times since you posted it. I just been processing.

I like the variety of moods. The piece has a nice flow to it. The double stop stuff is nice. You've got some good ideas.

Couple thoughts, most of the piece is in a limited range of the bass. I think you can create even more interest by varying the range a bit.

Also, while I like the mood of the middle part I find it to be a little meandering. I definitely can see where you are going with it but I'd like to hear some points of rest on notes of particular interest.

Lastly, think about the affect you can put on different notes. Vibrato, dynamics, sliding into notes... all that stuff will make some nice mood shifts.

Overall I think there are some good ideas. With a little work you have a nice little piece there.

Thanks a lot for the input and putting so much thought into it. I'm still a really inadequate composer on DB when it comes to the solo stuff and i need lots of work.
As far as the range- i'll be honest- i was avoiding too much range because of my dodgey intonation, haha. I'm still not that great getting into thumb position and such. Practice practice practice...

I agree with fingers on his remarks about dynamics....if I remember correctly ( 5stringDNA took a couple lessons with yours truly. ) we went over some possibilities in terms of the use of dynamics. In particular, I think many bassists tend to overlook the loud/soft dynamics possible on the DB. Many things to blame here, especially the timbre of the instrument. Most people I know think of the DB as an instrument that has, historically, struggled to be heard. Because of this, we don't always think of the bass as a dynamic instrument in terms of volume.
Question: did you write this piece out, or simply improvise it and decide, after the fact, to turn it into a composition?
I think you know....not just you, but any bassist/or instrumentalist of any kind, that it's a good idea to have the tape running at all times when you practice...you never know what might come out. I've done alot of this, and have come up with some pretty passable compositions , by stringing together a bunch of different practice sessions to make one big comp.
Again, play with some colors, both technique wise and tone-wise. Ever think of playing some sounds on strings between the bridge and the tail-piece? ? Especially effective arco.
Double stops added some dynamic color to your piece.
Right on!

Thanks a lot for the input Paul. Good to hear from you. I haven't written the piece out- I just spent an afternoon stringing it togather and getting it all roughed out. I should do some transcription work as I am getting rusty. I'll keep focusing on the dynamics.

I just got into a funk/jazz type trio this last weekend so it will be a great opportunity to work on my chops and expand my playing on the DB and the BG.
