The Goat Rodeo Sessions - Edgar Meyer

If you like bluegrass/classical/celtic/appalacian/improvisational fusion then here's a disc to get. I will be picking it up on CD since I'm an audiophile snob and MP3s don't do this music justice.

saw this on Colbert today...
Nov. 1--- November 01, 2011 - Yo-Yo Ma - The Colbert Report - Full Episode Video | Comedy Central

the performance is at the end of the episode and there is a bonus performance link on the website. here:
Exclusive - Yo-Yo Ma, Stuart Duncan, Edgar Meyer & Chris Thile - "Quarter Chicken Dark" - The Colbert Report - 2011-01-11 - Video Clip | Comedy Central

this amazon.com page has a very high quality video stream of a studio performance.
Amazon.com: The Goat Rodeo Sessions: Yo-Yo Ma, Stuart Duncan, Edgar Meyer, Chris Thile: Music

I love Chris Thile and Edgar's playing so much...Yo-Yo and Stuart Duncan too. If this style of music interests you, then you must also get Chris Thile's album, Not All Who Wander Are Lost. It has some of the most beautiful compositions and awe inspiring improvisations in this accoustic style.

i've got this album. it's really enjoyable. not for hardcore bluegrassers, and not for hardcore classical dudes either, imho, but I dig it a lot.

That's only if they don't have ears.
Edgar's sound is just fabulous on this. (as usual) I'd get it just for that.

The album is amazing through and through! I've had it on repeat for the past few days, since it came out. Really great compositions, the group sound is what gets me. Of course all of these guys are great individually, but I really think this album is a result of the whole being great than the sum of the parts.

I'm with you man. I just hate it when people complain about what these guys do as not being "something" enough. just listen and enjoy, right?

Wait. That's a complete turn around of what I quoted you as saying. Oh, you must be a Politcian.

you cut off the part where I said that I dig it a lot. It's a great album and i really enjoy it. I said what I said because I hate it when people use the "no true scotsman" argument for the music that edgar meyer makes.

"no true bluegrasser would play music that white"
"no true classical musician would play to the mainstream like that"

I just want people to shut up and enjoy.

eerbrev

p.s. i think this is a poor use of the "no true scotsman" fallacy, but I'm to tired to care.

I'm digging this CD. It's fascinating, any of these players are worth the price of admission, which happens to be very on sale in the B&N right now.

being of scotch irish descent, from georgia, with family all over the blue ridge and great smokey mountains, this sorta stuff just calls to me.

I really must spend some time learning more celtic fiddle tunes and reels, and deepening my appreciation of bluegrass. All these top tier bluegrass guys who have classical, jazz, and commercial chops really blow my mind and I'd really like to immerse myself more in the music they were listening too in the Appalachian vein when they were up and coming.

When I was a berklee I had a chance to jam with Chris Thile's guitar player from the Punch Brothers/String Dusters, Chris "Critter" Eldridge, who's dad is Ben Eldridge of the Seldom Scene. That guy was swinging so hard and ripping it up picking. I was but a young jazzer at the time and I couldn't even begin to keep up with the bluegrass guys....and some people think it's only I/IV/V!

My friend and I watched the Colbert clip, and he was cracking up just looking at Chris Thile "feeling the music".

That said, I'll definitely need to buy this.

This disc is great. When you listen to the whole thing, the range of styles they cover is fantastic, and there's even an extremely dissonant tune in there that works perfectly. I have the first disc that Edgar and Yo Yo made with Mark O'Connor, and this one is a large cut above. One of my current go-to recordings.

It's great on Blu Ray - wonderful surround sound! Plus it's good to see what's happening - the little jokes and flourishes! I love it!
