Ingrid Laubrock / Olie Brice / Javier Carmona - Catatumbo

I've got a new record coming out, with Ingrid Laubrock (tenor) and Javier Carmona (drums). This is what the record label blurb says about it, for what its worth:

"Exploring an endless textural palette beyond the boundaries of tonality, conventional rhythmic organization and preconceived notions of what experimental jazz should sound like, Catatumbo is a trio right at the cutting edge of the contemporary avant-improv scene. Featuring the German-born, former London, now Brooklyn-based original F-IRE Collective tenor/soprano saxophonist Ingrid Laubrock; the now Barcelona-based young drummer/percussionist Javier Carmona who is one of the movers and shakers in the free improv field, and another ex-London resident; and young double bassist Olie Brice who currently has deep roots in both the new and old avant scenes in London. Although each of them offers very diverse musical backgrounds, there’s an energy and intensity characteristic of these musicians that creates a lot of empathy in the music they create on their new self-titled debut, recorded for the Babel label"

anyway, if anyone's interested you can hear (or even buy) it here:

also, if anyone's reading this in London, we've got an album launch at the Vortex this monday (21/05/12). Javier unfortunately had to cancel his trip over, so Ingrid and I are doing one set duo, and one set trio with the great Mark Sanders on drums

Interesting work I like it
How did your trio find each other?--you're all from such different places but I guess it's not too distant

thanks Chuck. We were all living in London when we starting playing together, and have tried to keep it going since the other two moved

Hi Olie - sounds great - glad to hear that you're doing well!

I remember seeing Ingrid at the Jazz Summerschool when it was in Glamorgan - obviously I know of her as a great Sax player, but she surprised us by singing some Brazilian songs and sounded wonderful!

Ingrid is amazing! I played a double bill (one of my best concerts ever) with her fantastic trio with Veryan Weston and Hannah Marshall, I played later with Fred Van Hove and Peter Jacquemyn. Easter 2008 in Brussels! I'd love to here this one!

I had never heard either of you, but I have now.
Very nice!

yeah, Ingrid's great, one of my favourite saxophonists.

Bruce, I'm gigging in Brighton three times in the next few months if you're interested, all 3 improv gigs at Safehouse (27/06 with Nick Malcolm + drums tbc, 28/09 with Ken Vandermark and Mark Sanders, 31/10 with Dave Birchall and Phillip Marks)

Hi Olie - I've never been to "Safehouse" - I shall look it up. My usual haunts are Brighton Jazz Club which seems to have almost wound up and the Verdict Jazz club, which has just started up and has taken most of the Jazz audience with it - saw Julien Siegel playing with Kit Downes there a few weeks ago.

I like Mark Sanders playing, so shall definitely look out for that one - I shall be away in Kent on 27/06 though.

All the best,

Bruce

I have now had a chance to look up Safehouse and can see they are a collective for Free Improv - I shall definitely look this up - not far from where I live at all!
