Jim Hall and Basses

I picked this up a couple of weeks ago but have only now had much time to listen. Jim Hall does a series of duets with Scott Colley, Christian McBride, George Mraz, Dave Holland, and Charlie Haden. Some of it is pretty far out but those guys do some amazing stuff with their instruments.

I've had that one for a coupla years. Good album. Check out "Telephone" and "Alone Together" if you want more Jim Hall with Bass duo. Both those albums are with Ron Carter.

I had the good fortune to see Jim Hall, Steve La Spina, and Joey Barron at the Jazz Showcase in Chicago. It was INCREDIBLE. Jim dosen't do much traveling, so it was kind of a Once In A Lifetime experience, and I had to book a flight from St. Louis to do it. Jim would state the head and from there on out it was the musical adventure of a lifetime. Their is a recording of this particular group with Tom Harrell that I can't remember the title of on Denon. I'll look it up when I get home. Great stuff

Going back to the notorius Steve LaSpina thread, this is teh first recording Steve did after getting this wonderful French bass and he gets such a full, woody tone on this record. Very happening record.

I love NY. The first year or so I was up here I got to see the JH Quartet (with Gil Goldstein on piano and either JB or Terry Clarke) a BUNCH, including two different appearances at SWEET BASIL's where I made 4 out of the 5 nights each time.

Wow, we don't get that kind of stuff out here very often. But
I did hear the album that quartet made. All Across The City. un freaking
believable! It's kind of interesting how the folks I tend to gravitate toward Fred Hersch, Jim Hall, and Charlie Hayden all have a pedigree in "free playing." It's not my favorite music, but I think it opens up their creative processes.

Ed, are you serious? I didn't know Jim ever recorded with Fred Marshall. Do you mean Fred Marshall of Vince Guaraldi fame? When? i'm flabbergasted. Tell us more.

Right now....Jim Hall and Red Mitchell. Awful hard to find though...I lost my copy and after much crying and whimpering, Mr. Fuqua found me a copy.

Unfortunately, neither of these are in print. I tried to order them about a month ago at HMV, but they couldn't get 'em.

That said, this album sounds pretty incredible. Can't wait to check it out, and given that it's got very contemporary bassists, I'd say it should PROBABLY still be in print

Woops, I seemed to have forgotten that they also did Telepathy.

My favorites are Alone Together and Telepathy. Both Telepathy and Telephone were also issued together as a 2-cd set (that's the one I have). Maybe if you can find that, you can save some moola.

This ones a keeper. It was re-released on Atlantic Jazz as a CD. The real treat is getting to hear Steve Swallow play Double Bass. It's evidently not in print again. Evidently they recorded for three nights and Tom Dowd was one of the engineers. Sure would be nice to know where the rest of those sessions ended up.

I've been listening to a lot of this stuff recently, as a guitarist friend and I are putting together a duo. As well as the obvious Jim Hall/Ron Carter stuff I have been listening to Lenny Breau. There's some great bass work, but I don't know who the bass player is (it's not clear from allmusic, and the guitarist owns the CDs).

He also played me a very nice bass/vocal version of "Alone Together" by Tierny Sutton and ? We hope to adapt that arangement to guitar/bass, maybe.

I don't have the originally mentioned CD, so I'll look out for it while browsing at Amoeba. Are there any other bass-duo recordings anyone can suggest?

I have a tape copy given to me by a pianist friend of Lenny Breau Live @ Bourbon St. It's a duo with a Dave Young on bass. Real nice stuff. I think my friend mentioned that Breau also played in duo format with Don Thompson.

This thread seems to be full of recommendations for albums which are "out of print"...typical !!

They'll probably go on my list for the next time I'm browsing the specialist Jazz shops in London, around Soho....

When I started searching around on the internet for Jim Hall
I found Jim's "Artist Share Site" where he has a new album from the Village Vanguard with Scott Colley, and Lewis Nash.

If you purhase a membership you get the album. It's a little pricey $18.95 + Shipping, but it has to be burning with that combination of players. When's the last time Jim had a trio album anyway?

Evidently Jim and Scott were in Chicago at Symphony hall recently. Cool!

I was looking around the internet and saw a Bass/Guitar duo recording between Barney Kessell and Red Mitchell - anybody any ideas on whether this is a good purchase?
