Marco Panascia- 12 vids on YouTube

Hi fellow TBers,
I just followed Damon Smith's example, and uploaded my vids (12 of them right now) on YouTube... some are old, some are new; some are on upright bass, some are on electric bass. Check 'em out at:

I checked out the blues in F, very cool. I have no real critique, I just wanted to say that it is sounding great!

Marco,

Checked out a couple of the Eldar clips and I have two observations:

1) you guys play your ***es off.

2) Could the (male) announcer talking about Eldar at the Blue Note possibly be more annoying?

The "So What" clip sounds great. You do some things with moving sixth lines that I've been working on lately, and you play them way more in tune than I do at this point. Kudos, and thanks for the inspiration. I'll make you a deal: tell me what your favorite recording you're on is at this point, and I'll order it this weekend.

Last, where are the videos of you playing with a bow? I mean come on, you're Italian, for god's sake!

Hey Chris,
thanks for your nice words.

I couldn't agree more. That George Whipple guy is quite a character. My video editor and I actually got rid of most of his close ups on that clip, by superimposing additional footage, but we couldn't edit his voice out. Oh well.

Well, I am very happy about Eldar's recent Live at the Blue Note CD that I am on... the bass sound is not the best (the mix engineer must have been on crack or something), but the music is happening, IMVHO. You can download it for $9.99 on iTunes, hehe.

LOL... that was Damon's assumption... I am a bad Eye-talian: I don't drink wine and can't cook a mean pasta to save my life. Sorry, no bowed clips available at this time

Great stuff, Marco.... you look happy to be where you're at, with good reason. The Gage bass sounds terrific, too.

Thank you Marcus... you should tell David Gage, he'd enjoy the comment. That bass has been a lifesaver on the road, especially for my back. Yes, I do call it a cello when I check it in, they don't know any better, LOL

Great playing as always.
I really dig what Eldar is doing too.

OffTopic: Do you mind to give a couple of keywords on how you practised to develop those thumb position skills?

hey Norwegianwood,
thanks for your nice words. I am about to play with Eldar here in Seattle in a half hour, gladly the venue has wireless internet ;-)

As far as my thumb position stuff goes, I am totally self-taught when it comes to it... because of that, I am sure it can look very unorthodox to a legit bassist, but I just naturally tried to play on bass whatever I was digging from pianists or horn players I liked. And I learned a lot from an italian bassist named Dario Deidda. Google him up, he's the real deal.

Best,
Marco

Yeah Marco! You sound great (as usual) That bass seems really sensitive to what you're doing....even speaks great in the upper-register on the E string!

I think you added me on myspace awhile ago but I never really listened(what a shame!) Then I found eldar on there and thus you again. Wow man you get such an amazing sound out of those basses. I really love the clip with eldar for the (dutch?) tv show especially your solo.

Thank you for the nice comments, Paul, Pete and Clay!

Greetings from beautiful Monterey, CA... visiting the Big Sur tomorrow, it's supposed to be amazing.

You know, you should organize "Marco's Masterclass" at all the cities you visit for the local players. It'd be a fun way to spend your touring down-time, and put some extra cash in your pocket.

I'd offer to organize it for you but I have no skills in that area (or any other it seems ) - I couldn't organize the proverbial p*ss-up in a brewery. I'd attend an LA event, though.

Andy,
I am hiring you as my manager and booking agent. It's official.

-Marco

P.S. How's Isabella Juzeka doing? (just came up with a name for your new bass)

Then let go of any structure or reason that you may have thought you had in life. And I only charge 110% (of gross).

That'd sound pretty good delivered in an Italian accent.

The Juzek's doing great - I've been getting complments from other band members. The weichs are playing in and it's sounding great already...especially now I'm getting used to the Eb neck and my intonation is improving.

Thumbs up

I downloaded all 12 clips, and really enjoyed them. I especially liked the NAMM show stuff with Carol Kaye, and there was all stuff going on around you,and you both just kept playing your asses off. Thanks for sharing those with us. Any plans to come to the UK?

Thank you, Simandlhandle. Carol Kaye is da bomb! It's great to play with her at NAMM every year. A gig with Eldar at Ronnie Scott's in London is in the works for early 2007, so stay tuned. I haven't been to London since 1998, and I am really looking forward to going back.

I can vouch for that CD being awesome. The bass sounds good, I think. Actually I only bought 2 tracks... Eldar playing A Train solo, and Straight No Chaser feat. Roy Hargrove. Both of those are completely sick. There's a part near the beginning of Eldar's solo on Straight No Chaser where Marco messes around a bit and gets a big whoop from the audience. It sounds great!
