Matt Weiner, "At the Ukeshack #1"

I picked up this CD at Hammond-Ashley in Seattle in July, and I'm really impressed:

I've never met bassist Matt Weiner or his collaborator on this CD, ukulele virtuoso Del Ray, but this stuff is the real thing -- clear, tasteful, creative, unusual, and crisp playing by both Matt and Del on some really nice tunes. It's much more than a novelty -- this is real music-making.

I can't describe the genre, and would appreciate any thoughts by those who would care to try. I might submit that it has elements of older jazz (some Dixieland licks), folk, old-timey music, some influences from Hawaii, and more. In any case, to me these recordings recall the Duke Ellington saying that, "If it sounds good, it IS good."

Put this on your Christmas list. You won't be sorry.
