New NEAL MINER disc - HAPPY HOUR

On Gut String Records! I just got a copy yesterday and it's a nice, swinging affair. Neal plays so great - time, sound, ideas- definitely one of my all time favorites.

HAPPY HOUR with Mike Kanan on piano and Joe Strasser on drums. HIGHLY recommended.
Check out BYE BYE BABY....

Awesome!

Seems like every time lately I hear something that really has a great feel lately it turns out Joe Strasser is the drummer.

Thumbs up

I'm giving this thread the ole bump because I enjoy supporting players I'm not familiar with, who tickle my musical bone.
I haven't yet received my copy, but I thought I might give some observations that I've made based on a few moments with the clips.
"Bye, bye Baby" is from that old Marilyn Monroe, Jane Russell movie, "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes". I really dig when players pull out odd, obscure tunes outta nowhere. Bill Evans loved doing this. The little counter-line that Neal plays with the piano is really neat.
The few solos from Neal are simple, BUT musical. His left hand ornamentations remind me of early Red Mitchell gut stuff.
If you are a bit weary of so-called bass "virtuosi", all thumb posititioning with strings laying on the board, this may be your cuppa. It IS mine.
Make no mistake, though. This doesn't mean that I think that Ed Fuqua has ANY taste. In anything.

I flat-out love this tune. Dave McKenna and Ed Bickert swing the living hell out of it on a recording that never got to CD, only tape or LP. You can imagine what Dave's left hand does with the changes.
Paulie, you're right about Jane Russell and Marilyn Monroe. Here it is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZlgVJ9iNzM8 Note the people clapping on 2 and 4; must be musicians, not actors.
Paul, can you see Gloria DeHaven doing this?
Gotta buy this. Thanks, Ed.

If I'd known he was at EAR I'd probably have gone. He gets the greatest sound. I've heard his sextet with Chris Byars at Smalls and have also heard him backing up Annie Ross. I totally dig his first two records. The Evening Sound is one of my favorite jazz recordings, period. Looking forward to hearing the new one.
